Doctor Who: Season 12 Reviews
Jodie Whitaker’s talents are wasted, as the show is poorly written, boring, and painfully unfunny. The Doctor’s charisma and wit have been siphoned from the character due to Chibnall’s questionable decisions during this era of NuWho.
No consistency whatsoever. Lore doesn't matter anymore and every scene needs some sort of draw to THE MESSAGE.
A prime example when you set rules and then brake them 12 min later. Bad writing and execution.
Except for the timeless child storyline and the amount of companions this season is her best
I really tried to like this new series, but the writing was awful. As was the new title sequence and music. Jodie Whitaker is a talented actress, but even she couldn't save this show from the abysmal scripts. Over-focusing on "The Message" has destroyed this once wonderful show. RIP, Doctor Who (1963-2017).
No this does not do anything to "established lore". There has been hints that the Doctor was more than just a Time Lord since the eighties and it was confirmed the Doctor had pre-Hartnell incarnations in the seventies. I really enjoyed this season and it's ability to completely reinsert the mystery back into a character we thought we knew everything about. I really enjoyed Tesla, Praxeus, most of the season really. There's only really Orphan 55 I didn't like much. The final three partner was really gripping. Whittaker rapidly rising up my list of favourite Doctors.
I didn't think it could get worse, but it did. Do yourself a favor and stop watching after Season 9, Episode 12. Everything after that is garbage.
is there any way to hate a season of a beloved series more than I hate this , this was a travesty , the acting was pretty poor, but we are not expecting streep from Jody Whitacker but would hope to get better than Tessa Thompson level of incompetence. Undid canon, just unforgivably bad , makes velma look decent
Ruined the lore and feel of what is doctor who
Stopped watching Doctor Who for a little while as I've been busy. Got some spare time and decided to check it out. Unfortunately it was wholly disappointing. The story lines are simplistic, the return of the master seems shoehorned in there just for there to be a big bad. Jodie Whitaker seems to be a decent actor and the companions are decent characters and have great actors. Diversity is great but not when people are added into the show just for the sake of being there. Make them fleshed our characters who have motivations and dreams rather than just side characters. Overall the series is just missing the key factors that make Doctor Who what it is.
Who and why are they actively destroying every franchise in existence ???
Best thing I've seen in a while, not for your typical white man grumbler audience, even if the plot written could've been much better paced the chemistry of the cast is undeniable, maybe that's why they're all angry about, after all none of the ones before have been such charismatic likable characters - all in one room, at the same time. Delightful.
Definitely think the writers were juggling way too many balls this season but it was still decent.
While the highlights of this season are better than anything s11 had to offer, it's bad stories are just woeful. Its season arc, the Timeless Child story, is obviously extremely controversial, and could easily have been fixed, as well as making the Master's turn back to evil make narrative sense, by having the Master be the Timeless Child but subject to generations of memory wiping, and the Doctor be Tecteun but likewise subject to the generations of memory wiping. There was already a Time Lors secret service existent within the DW canon (the Celestial Intervention Agency) and this could have been utilised as the explanation, possibly even bringing in Rassilon or Omega as the ones who instigated or insisted upon their memory wiping. What we got instead of that feels more like Chibnall's desire to prevent the possibility of a future writer following up on the so-called Cartmel Masterplan which was starting to take shape just as the original series was axed because he personally didn't like it. So to ensure it would never see the light of day he wrote something that's close to it in nature, but completely misses the point of it in theme and tone, and makes the Doctor basically a god from another dimension, more powerful than even the Time Lords and Daleks could imagine. Poor, Chibs. Very poor
Ugh. A struggle to watch. Prefer going back and watching the first 10 seasons.
Season 12 of Doctor Who is a perfect example of alienating your audience and destroying the lore of a long running and beloved show. I, like many long time DW fans, am going to pretend that Chibnall didn't destroy DW and act like this insult of a season never happened. Changing the lore in such a way is an insult to EVERYONE who worked hard on this show in the past 60 years. William Hartnell will FOREVER be the FIRST incarnation of the Doctor and the Timelords will have become what they are, not because of some Mary Sue Magic Child, but by Evolution as it has been well established. Whittaker did try her best, but again, with horrible writing there is only so much you can do. Perhaps she would have been a brilliant Doctor if under the helm of an actual competent writer/showrunner.
This is a prime example on how to completely SHATTER the established lore that has been around for over 50 years. No one, and I repeat, NO ONE should ever have the power to do what Chibnall did. It's not only disrespectful to the fans, but to the show and everyone who previously worked on it.
Even worse than Season 11. And that season was so bad my family stopped watching the show regularly for the first time since the NuWho revival. On watching later on, was sad to see the reasons we stopped watching, poor writing, boring stores, miscast actors, etc… just got worse. Culminating in the nonsense finale.
Probably the worst season of all... really bad
While the season has a couple decent offerings (Spyfall, Fugitive of the Judoon) the rest is mediocre or plain bad. Orphan 55 & Praxeus set new lows for single episodes. But the season finale easily the worst of any Doctor Who series, damaging the entire 50+ year continuity of the series.
