GLOW: Season 3 Reviews

October 29, 2021
There are a lot of characters to balance all the time and not everyone can be in the spotlight for too long. But the show still manages to dig into a lot of deep stuff for several different characters this season.

As ever, GLOW continues to take big swings this season, energetically ricocheting between its supporting cast of scene-stealing characters.

All in all, GLOW continues to shine (in gaudy '80s garb!).

There's a kind of theater-dork fantasy camp thing going on with the GLOW writer's staff. Instead of pile-drivers, we must endure torch songs and glitter-bombs, which just don't make sense in the context of the show.

Unlike the beaten and battered bodies of the lady wrestlers, GLOW is just getting better and better as time goes on.

[GLOW] is so straightforward about women's complexity that it's thrilling.

It's still very entertaining, thanks to the perfect timing of its excellent cast, but it feels more disposable than ever.

Without a doubt, "GLOW" is one of the most empowering and necessary pieces on television right now.

It might have seemed like a fun idea to play with when they discussed it in the writers' room, but GLOW lost a lot of its charm once Vegas became a reality.

[T]here's a lot to like about this season of GLOW, but the botches in storytelling keep me from saying I outright loved it.

[GLOW] is a bright, bedazzled Trojan horse, exposing societal injustices one body slam at a time. And its third season is perhaps its best.

GLOW season 3 is a show about women's bodies as it's always been a show about women's bodies, but here the beauty seems to lie how far they'll bend before they break.

Season 3 improves as the writers move the characters beyond the roles that they're stuck in, as wrestlers and as people.

Glow continues to be one of Netflix's best original series, expertly balancing comedy and drama on a tightrope and packaged with just enough social commentary to be vital - but not overbearing - in 2019.

This show does not shy away from the indignities and slights dealt, repeatedly, to Debbie and Ruth. But they never stop trying to get ahead on their own terms, and GLOW finds grace in their effort.

GLOW continues to find new ground through its trust in its messy, loud, and ultimately kind-hearted characters.

The gorgeous ladies of wrestling have made an epic comeback with the show's third season, set among the blinding lights and clinking slot machine sounds of Las Vegas, an ultimately uneven ride.

GLOW season 3 builds on the strong foundation of the previous 20 episodes. It is deeper, smarter, and more expansive. However, it still feels like GLOW. It has not yet lost its jangly energy and rough edges even as it improves.

As always, the way in which the travails of GLOW sit alongside contemporary feminism is intriguing and instructive, if occasionally depressing.

It's an enjoyable season, filled with deep character moments and moral messages for its 2019 audience, but the stranglehold of the Vegas environment is stifling. It keeps the season from truly being able to (pardon my pun) glow.
