Critic Reviews for Telenovela Season 1

Still, this is Longoria's show all the way and she's never been better. Her physical comedy is on point; her timing is impeccable; and even when Ana Sofia is supposed to look bedraggled, Longoria remains radiant.

If nothing else, it will make you laugh at the nonsense of it all, and that's a good thing. A very good thing.

Telenovela may not have depth, but watching Longoria mug for the camera ain't a bad way to spend half an hour.

The show also wears well, with Longoria vigorously in the forefront and a solid supporting cast led by scene-stealers Diana Maria Riva and Alex Meneses.

Writers Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein, from "Cougar Town" and "My Name Is Earl," find a way to create an ensemble of characters around Longoria who are broad caricatures and yet recognizably human.

The show offers a playful take on the world of Mexican soap operas. It is witty, insightful, fun and definitely unique in its setting.

While Telenovela might not strive to be high art, who is asking it to go above and beyond? Sure, there is a lot of intelligent comedy out there, but sometimes you just want a show where the laughs are a bit obvious and the guys are pretty to look at.

A lot of Telenovela's humor will stretch across any cultural divide.

Trouble is, there's not a single surprising twist on any of the threadbare inside-showbiz tropes, and even worse, every single zinger feels like it's from a hastily assembled first draft.

Taking on Spanish-language soap operas, Eva Longoria tries to show the "30 Rock"-like fun that happens behind the scenes. All too often, though, this looks like a "Saturday Night Live" skit that doesn't quite land.

Telenovela is a welcome reflection of America 2015 as well as an on-the-money satire and love letter to a beloved TV genre watched by millions daily.

Audience Reviews for Telenovela: Season 1

  • Mar 14, 2016
It's just not funny. Writing is terrible. Acting is terrible. I love Eva Longoria, but that wasn't enough to keep me interested.
  • Feb 22, 2016
Very funny, cheek-in-tongue new series - I'd love to see it go in.
  • Jan 12, 2016
One of the creators is Robert Harling, known for Steel Magnolias and Soapdish, two of the greatest repositories of one-liners ever. This show is charming and quick and filled with some of the best actors around. Family-friendly fun. Eva is HILARIOUS and I'm so proud of her. We need more fun like this on TV.

Pretty terrible to watch. Stereotypes abound. 2D characters.
  • Jan 11, 2016
There is no reason this is made except pandering to Latinas. They deserve better.
  • Jan 08, 2016
Not funny. Watched the pilot and didn't laugh once. Too bad. A lot of talented actors but the writing just falls flat.
