Critic Reviews for Telenovela Season 1

All Critics (19) | Top Critics (13)

Telenovela may not have depth, but watching Longoria mug for the camera ain't a bad way to spend half an hour.

Fun, light, colorful and original.

The show also wears well, with Longoria vigorously in the forefront and a solid supporting cast led by scene-stealers Diana Maria Riva and Alex Meneses.

Writers Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein, from "Cougar Town" and "My Name Is Earl," find a way to create an ensemble of characters around Longoria who are broad caricatures and yet recognizably human.

Dec 3, 2015 | Full Review…

Telenovela manages to mine a few culturally specific tropes for some genuinely universal laughs.

Jan 6, 2016 | Full Review…

A comedy that strains for fizzy yet comes off as frantic, like so many other network comedies this show wastes great actors -- in particular the divine Eva Longoria -- on bad writing.

Dec 9, 2015 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Silly and eccentric but not quite graceful enough to be considered irreverent, producer/star Eva Longoria's eager commitment to the premise still allows Telenovela to crackle with great jokes and solid physical comedy.

Dec 7, 2015 | Rating: 7/10 | Full Review…

Longoria and most of the cast are charming; if you're looking for well-performed, lightweight entertainment, here it is.

Dec 7, 2015 | Full Review…

Telenovela can be fun, if only the show knew the difference between silly and dumb.

Dec 7, 2015 | Full Review…

The show clearly wants to be like the movie Soapdish, but Telenovela can't quite pull it off. A second episode is considerably less funny than the pilot, a danger sign.

Dec 2, 2015 | Full Review…

Although Telenovela takes its name from an exuberantly dramatic genre of soap opera, its plots are mundane.

Jan 7, 2016 | Full Review…

While Telenovela employs a lot of Latin actors, it doesn't give them enough good lines to make the latest entry in the Too Much Television universe worth your time.

Audience Reviews for Telenovela: Season 1

  • Mar 14, 2016
It's just not funny. Writing is terrible. Acting is terrible. I love Eva Longoria, but that wasn't enough to keep me interested.
  • Feb 22, 2016
Very funny, cheek-in-tongue new series - I'd love to see it go in.
  • Jan 12, 2016
One of the creators is Robert Harling, known for Steel Magnolias and Soapdish, two of the greatest repositories of one-liners ever. This show is charming and quick and filled with some of the best actors around. Family-friendly fun. Eva is HILARIOUS and I'm so proud of her. We need more fun like this on TV.

Pretty terrible to watch. Stereotypes abound. 2D characters.
  • Jan 11, 2016
There is no reason this is made except pandering to Latinas. They deserve better.
  • Jan 08, 2016
Not funny. Watched the pilot and didn't laugh once. Too bad. A lot of talented actors but the writing just falls flat.
  • Jan 04, 2016
Telenovela on NBC is a great new show and it is also very funny!
  • Jan 04, 2016
    A extremely hilarious show.
  • Dec 26, 2015
It was hard to watch... Not funny and forced.
