Inspector Morse embodies cultured, upper-middle-class Britishness, and enjoys the finer things in life - good beer, vintage cars, fine opera. He and his trusty companion, Detective Sergeant Lewis, solve the crimes that plague the environs of University of Oxford. Although he's a brilliant detective, Morse is not infallible - and he's often pretty grumpy to boot. But he and Lewis tend to make sure the bad guys pay for their crimes.

Peggy S. @Altumshell Feb 4 Morse has stood the test of time. Superb acting, smart plots and of course historic context See more Edward L @Glyndower Dec 12 'Morse' is regularly listed by critics as one of the best British TV series of all time and one of my favourites when first broadcast. Rewatching it nearly 40 years after its first appearance it suffers from the same lack of pace and theatricality of many older TV series, though it is fun to watch actors who are now household names in supporting roles. The performances of Thaw and Whately are superb but the plots are somewhat repetitive and Morse's inability to communicate with the inappropriate women for whom he falls becomes simply annoying, as is the over-loud classical music that serves as 'mood music' for many scenes. The sequel and prequel series produced after Thaw's death, 'Lewis' and 'Endeavour' are, unusually, in many respects better than the original particularly in terms of pacing. Worth watching as a period piece, in part because of the amusing details: beer at 98p a pint; bad haircuts and mobile phones, when they eventually appear, the size of bricks!
