Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Season 1 (2001 - 2002)

Critic Consensus: Criminal Intent may hold jurisdiction over viewers who get a kick out of Vincent D'Onofrio's mannered performance, but this spinoff adheres too closely to the Law & Order formula, only without the crucial element of mystery.

Tv Season Info

Series creator and executive producer Dick Wolf's second "Law & Order" spin-off tells each story from the criminal's point of view. Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe star as Dets. Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames of the Major Case Squad; Jamey Sheridan portrays their superior, Capt. James Deakins; and Courtney B. Vance plays ADA Ron Carver. Season 1 gets underway when a jewelry heist turns deadly. Other cases feature an apparent murder-suicide; a lawyer (Griffin Dunne) who may be killing his mistresses; the disappearance of a plastic surgeon's wife; the death of a judge's clerk in the magistrate's home; and a suspected copycat killer. Dets. Logan (Jerry Orbach) and Green (Jesse L. Martin) from the original "Law & Order" also make an appearance in a case that involves a string of cyanide-poisoning deaths.

Critic Reviews for Law & Order: Criminal Intent Season 1

All Critics (18) | Top Critics (11)

It's just another opportunity to present grisly murders and shrewd detectives.

Though sharply staged against New York locales, the show simply offers more of the same.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Wolf's latest spinoff for NBC, is a reach, and if you watch only one or two episodes, you'll probably conclude that Wolf has finally exceeded his grasp.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Whatever its intent, all this Law & Order can muster is more of the same stuff.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Thanks to the mesmerizing performance of Vincent D'Onofrio as New York City Det. Bobby Goren, this new series enhances the value of the brand.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

It looks like a lot of cop shows that have gone before, no matter what Wolf says about its criminal-based perspective.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

Moody and urbane, CI loses some emotion.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

The best thing about the show is that its cast is so overqualified for it. Vincent D'Onofrio is one of the most inspired and versatile young actors of our time.

Nov 1, 2018 | Full Review…

D'Onofrio is so eccentrically entertaining, even his costar Kathryn Erbe seems fascinated.

Nov 1, 2018 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

You're still left feeling you've been sold a diluted version of the stronger original product -- one in which the only distinguishing gimmick is a bad one.
