Lives hang in the balance as detectives and prosecutors pursue justice in New York City. In cases ripped from the headlines, police investigate serious and often deadly crimes, weighing the evidence and questioning the suspects until someone is taken into custody. The district attorney's office then builds a case to convict the perpetrator by proving the person guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Working together, these expert teams navigate all sides of the complex criminal justice system to make New York a safer place -- and keep the worst offenders off the streets.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Law & Order returns with its tried-and-true formula unchanged, sticking to its strengths as a straightforward procedural while giving some acknowledgement of society's increasingly polarized view of crime and punishment.

No profession could ask for a better public relationship machine than the one Wolf and fellow procedural creators and producers provide to law enforcement, free of charge. Go to Full Review

The formula remains unchanged, just with new pieces plugged into the machinery, among them Camryn Manheim as Bernard's boss. And given the longevity of Dick Wolf's creation and its various spinoffs, why mess with success? Go to Full Review

The show feels like a walking corpse brought back from the dead, but lacking any of the important animating qualities that made it stand out in a well-worn genre. Go to Full Review

Regrettably, the twenty-first season of Law and Order picks up right where the 2010 version left off, the true crime influences of the early seasons completely forgotten. Go to Full Review

Fortunately, the show succeeds with a few well-placed casting choices and a case that leaves viewers conflicted. Go to Full Review

Whether the show will really go deep into examining the reality of policing in the post-George-Floyd era is still to be determined. But, judging by the first episode, it’s going in the right direction. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 Jun 2 10 successful National Broadcasting Company episodes. See more Annalee H @randomlee.me Feb 25 I found it rather discouraging. The new revised seems to cater to movements instead of justice. And,the new ADA assistant should be a defense attorney not an ADA, she comes across as an advocate not someone working for an office seeking a conviction. See more Philip R @PhilipRoss 01/12/2025 Awful! I am addicted to the original show and rewatch episodes all the time, they are that good. The reboot is the same format which we know works. So that leaves horrible casting but the worst part is the writing. Awful I tell ya, just awful! See more Mark Y @RT83633802 09/17/2024 Just watched this after watching the previous season and it's like a completely different show. Horrible acting, cases don't make sense. Lawyers don't behave like they should. See more Paul T @RT19736458 01/25/2024 I still watch the reruns and was really looking forward to the new series but its pale shadow of the original, wooden acting, and where's the humour gone? the one off observations of Lennie Briscoe and Van Buren were brilliant as the comments of Arthur Branch and Adam Schiff were a delight, nothing like that so far See more Donna R @RT48673959 11/11/2023 Utterly incredible that a majority of "professional" critics rate this sludge positively. The scripts are so bad that the characters act in completely incoherent ways; the understanding of legal issues, once the show's strong point, is nonexistent; and the acting (especially the prosecutors) is worse than a high-school play, largely because the writing is so juvenile. This is like a parody of the old stellar show. I'm willing to put up with a lot for mindless evening TV, but this is actually the worst acting and writing I have EVER seen on prime time. How the mighty have fallen. See more Read all reviews
