It’s the feel-bad series with which to ring in the new year. Go to Full Review

We get a sense it was a combination of an obsessive need to prove himself, an almost pathological desire to be admired and loved, and an utter lack of empathy for his fellow man and woman. Go to Full Review

Among Mr. Berlinger’s accomplishments in The Monster of Wall Street is not making the Madoff story remotely romantic, or even a parable, while at the same time putting blood in its veins. Go to Full Review

The Monster of Wall Street is a better-than-average thrash at the true-financial-crime genre that Netflix likes so much. If you have even a glancing interest in the case, it's well worth watching. Go to Full Review

But the issues uncovered – from ethics and oversight to greed and fraud – are sure to expose (and potentially reshape) thoughts on white-collar crime and its impact on society. Go to Full Review

Gary B @RT52578447 07/01/2024 Top-quality documentary which I watched in one sitting. The Madoff story, as one witness says, plays like a Shakespearean tragedy. The series does try to make the obligatory moral that more financial regulation is needed. Maybe. But sufficient laws were in place to stop Madoff. They just weren't enforced. See more Jimmy R @Puppentiger 10/18/2023 It was solid, but 2 episodes or one 2 hours movie would´ve been enough to tell the story. See more F. Ty E @RT37360616 03/26/2023 A great review of Madoff's life and how many, many times the SEC missed bringing him to justice. Great use of Madoff's interviews in jail to destroy the conspiracy theories that might have otherwise grown up about him. Hearing his own admissions is key. See more Dustin D @RT12543299 02/02/2023 Even more amazing than the scale of Bernie Madoff's fraud was how hardly anyone caught on to it for so long. How credulous do you have to be to not see through such an obvious scheme? (I'm not referring to the everyday folk who put their money under his management, but the industry insiders who should have known better.) One competitor used mathematical proofs to point the SEC to obvious red flags, but someone like myself who doesn't have a strong background in math can spot a scam using common sense principles. What I would have liked to know, that no one seems able to answer, is what was going through Madoff's mind? Ponzi schemes ALWAYS fail. They have to by design. The people who buy in and get out early do so at the expense of those who get in late. It's unsustainable by nature. Madoff surely understood this. What was he planning to do when it failed? Apparently, come clean and go to prison, because otherwise he would have pulled the plug much earlier. See more dave d @RT34924333 01/24/2023 Worth watching just as a reminder at greed being the root of all evil. A detailed and lengthy account that skewers the hall-of-shame crook, Bernie Madoff. See more Cinephile F @RT52030170 01/24/2023 I learned a lot about that industry from this docuseries. It was a slow burner but I really enjoyed it. See more Read all reviews
