Tv Season Info

Melissa McCarthy and comedian Billy Gardell are charming and real as the stars of this engaging sitcom, which tells the tale of a teacher and police officer trying hard to lose weight---and then falling in love. In the opener, Chicago teacher Molly Flynn meets Windy City officer Mike Biggs at an Overeaters Anonymous gathering and invites him to speak to her fourth-grade class. Rounding out the stellar cast is Mike's infectiously upbeat patrol partner, Carl (Reno Wilson), Molly's voluptuous sister, Victoria (Katy Mixon), and their slightly ditzy mom, Joyce (Swoosie Kurtz). And as in most cases, the course of true love does not always run smoothly, with getting-to-know-you dates, dealing with offbeat relatives (including Mike's overbearing and intrusive mother, Peggy (Rondi Reed)), meeting each other's friends, buying the perfect Christmas present and arranging the perfect Valentine's Day assignation. And of course, at some point there's the question of sex. Melissa McCarthy's pitch-perfect season-long performance earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

This is a show that is likely to transform through several episodes as more is revealed about the underlying reasons for Mike and Molly's weight. But the well delivered comedy is reason enough for the curious viewer to tune in right now.

The weight humor is less directed at them and more shared with them, and they have nice, low-key chemistry. It's a very warm vision of both of them most of the time, and that's quite rare.

Laughing at 22 consecutive minutes of socially unredeemed fat jokes may leave you feeling as if you've just eaten a 36-inch anchovy-and-pineapple pizza: bloated and yucky.

There's a real sweetness to the tentative romance brewing between Mike and Molly. It helps that both actors, able supporting players in the past are immensely likable and share good chemistry and timing.

The new sitcom Mike & Molly won't change your life, but it will make 30 minutes of it happier and more fun.

It's much sweeter and funnier than it sounds.

Is 48 fat jokes in a 22-minute episode of a show about fat people - an incredible 35.56 per cent of the total jokes - excessive?

There's a version that's laughing with its characters...the problem is that there's a different version of Mike & Molly that's much easier to see and that's the version that Lorre's detractors were probably afraid of.

While it's not necessarily done in poor taste, it's a shame that a show about two people who don't fit the traditional leading-role body types chooses to play the weight card so heavy-handedly.

"Mike & Molly," is 21 minutes of fat jokes... Not a single one of these jokes are funny.

Audience Reviews for Mike & Molly: Season 1

This show is just a terrible cliche full of fat jokes, and miserable parents. It broadens absolutely nothing for the sitcom genre. it's characters aren't interesting, nor do they have anything interesting to say, and their jokes are predictable and tired.
