Monster: The Ed Gein Story is exploitative, trashy, and entirely your fault. Certainly, it’s among the more unusual television theses presented this year, and sort of fascinating in its own wrong-headed way. Go to Full Review

It may seem as if the point is to turn the mirror on society’s endless appetite for monstrosity. But, as usual, the makers of “Monster” want to have it all ways. Go to Full Review

For all its craft and conviction, this series doesn’t illuminate our fascination with evil so much as indulge it, and that’s the real horror. Go to Full Review

The show is both critique and confession, art and indictment. It’s a true-crime thriller that eats its own genre alive. Go to Full Review

Season 3 is visceral, uncomfortable, and tells this true story of Ed Gein in a slightly fictionalized way, not straying away from his atrocities. Hunnam makes some interesting decisions that are memorable, regardless of how divisive they will be. Go to Full Review

The Ed Gein Story will be hard to top in subsequent seasons of Monster, but for now, this is a scary ass story perfect to watch for Halloween. Go to Full Review

Ryann G @ryannolivia 20h As someone who’s done a deep dive on Ed Gein’s life, this is highly fictionalized. I understand that they need to add details to add length to the series, but it would’ve been better off as a movie that used factual, proven information. Ed Gein was proven to have killed 2 people and grave robbed outside of that. He had very little affiliation with the character Adeline was based off of. And, he claimed he never indulged in sex with the bodies. I feel that they shouldn’t put all these things into a series just to add length, I think they need actual depth into what was proven to have happened. Outside of that, the cinematography and casting is magnificent. I was truly impressed by the quality of this series, even when the plot was fictional most of the time. See more Martin J @RT26038324 5d It was Jewish propoganda against Nazis. It was not a show. Very little focus on Ed Gein. They would constantly bring up second world war, and holocaust. Made me feel like I was not watching a story about Ed Gein. I was hoping for something similar to Jeffrey Dahmer, that was also propogandist but still good. This how ever was just a litle redicules. See more Wallef S @Wsil10 Jul 11 The series was supposed to be a documentary, like the series about the Mendendez brothers and Jeffrey Dahmer, but it ended up looking like a horror novel. See more Kathleen D @Dody91 Jul 5 It was atrociously bad, can't believe the multiple attempts to mislead the viewer. It's clear they didn't have enough to fill 8 episodes so they veered into the making of the movies and the random knock-off version of Mindhunter. I appreciated that the first two seasons at least followed what was documented. Also, it's clear that Netflix knew this season was wildly inaccurate because the previous two seasons got companion documentaries released soon after. See more Nick A @RNickAnderson Jun 19 Overall, this is a well-made and engaging series that's worth watching if you have any interest in Ed Gein or true crime in general. Charlie Hunnam delivers a standout performance, capturing Gein's awkwardness, unsettling demeanor, and quiet unpredictability without ever feeling exaggerated. The period setting is immersive and does an excellent job of pulling viewers into a fascinating chapter of American history that feels both distant and strangely familiar. While I enjoyed the series, it didn't completely blow me away. The frequent references to Alfred Hitchcock, Hollywood, and other historical events may confuse viewers who aren't already familiar with their significance, making it harder at times to separate Gein's real story from the cultural impact it inspired. A few scenes also felt more focused on shock value than meaningful storytelling. Even so, the series remains engaging throughout and blends true crime, horror, and cultural history into an entertaining watch. See more Read all reviews
