Wright has created a deliriously experimental series about a monstrous figure, jamming as many moving parts, camera tricks, and maximalist flourishes he can fit into the frame to demonstrate how the Italian dictator was such a magnetic, destructive force. Go to Full Review
Judy Berman TIME Magazine Sep 29
Mussolini is at once an incisive psychological portrait of one of the 20th century’s most destructive individuals and a clear-eyed dissection of fascism’s politically expedient, intellectually incoherent origins. Go to Full Review

There's no denying that "Son Of The Century" pulls you along and gets you thinking about how dictatorships happen. It's helped by Marinelli's magnetic, shape-shifting performance. Go to Full Review

What is most impressive is Joe Wright’s visionary directing, which is violent, playful and thoughtful in equal measure. Go to Full Review

Brutally methodical in its detailing of how Democracy crumbles by the eensiest of steps, one norm crossed without a word after another until it's too late and nobody's noticed Go to Full Review

Mussolini: Son of the Century is, above all, a sensorial experience. A cinematic piece that highlights a sense of discontent channeled into violence by a politician who turns criminal. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Tom F Jan 29 A wild journey of a narcissist stumbling his way to autocratic power, fortunately nothing at all relevant to the modern day. See more Jommy D @Cyclops67 Jan 13 Fantastically shot drama-biopic of Benito Mussolini. The many fourth wall breaks serve as a chilling view inside his psyche, unveiling an insincere, manipulative, and narcissistic personality bent on power at all costs. His personal life was expertly shown, with a tragic subplot with his long-suffering, yet loyal wife, seeking love and receiving nothing but abuse, physical and emotional. The only thing I would like to see was the true downfall of il Duce, from Gran Sasso to (the hinted at) public display in Milan. Overall, a thought provoking and powerful series of a twisted little dictator whose name has been carved in infamy. See more Dean P Nov 14 Brilliant, highly entertaining See more Al H Oct 25 Luca Marinelli was outstanding in a totally absorbing miniseries. The style won’t be to everyone’s liking but it worked for me - extraordinarily tense scenes mixed seamlessly with humour and excellent cinematography / lighting etc and a brilliantly cast set of actors and actresses all across the piece. I have to admit my knowledge of Mussolini was very limited to his proximity to the Hitler era - the fact that this series doesn’t even touch on that shows how much I have to learn. All in all a superb 8 hours of TV. And all the better for having to watch the screen to read the subtitles rather than the usual doomscrolling on your iPad whilst there’s some stuff you’re only really half concentrating on! See more René C Oct 23 I have never written a Rotten Tomatoes review before, but Mussolini: Son of the Century made it necessary. The series is a gripping study of how ambition turns into tyranny and belief into violence. Luca Marinelli’s performance is pitch perfect, capturing both Mussolini’s magnetism and his descent into madness. By the end, the fear in every face makes clear that the movement has escaped its maker’s control. It is haunting, beautifully crafted, and impossible to forget. See more Read all reviews
