What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite the occasional laugh, Ricky Gervais' Alley Cats is a repetitive and self-indulgent misfire that rarely finds the humor or heart it's chasing.

I would be genuinely fascinated to ask [Ricky Gervais] one question: what does he really think of Alley Cats? Watching the abrasive, smug, and completely mirthless new Netflix cartoon from the British comedy titan, I found it genuinely impossible to tell. Go to Full Review

Alley Cats is staggeringly unfunny. It’s bizarre to see someone of Gervais’s talent produce this. Go to Full Review
Angie Han The Hollywood Reporter Aug 10, 2026
[Turns] on a dime between casually vicious and ooey-gooey sweet. But lacking the creative depth to make either tone land, it winds up a comedy of existential angst that’s rarely all that funny and only occasionally kind of moving. Go to Full Review

In just over 90 minutes, Gervais manages to land some successful jokes and offer a sharp insight into human frailties —perhaps one of his greatest talents—but his biting humor too often veers into vulgarity and repetition [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

[Ricky Gervais] is so inflated with ego that he can't accept what we've all known for a while: he needs someone to rein him in and co-write with him. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review
James Walton The Spectator Aug 27, 2026
It’s a dispiriting watch, with all of Gervais’s weaknesses on display (sentimentality, cod philosophy, smugness) and only the occasional sighting of a mildly funny joke. Go to Full Review

Tom R @RT26773826 10 hrs ago Ricky Gervais taking his well worn nihilism and projecting it onto neurotic cats is probably a bit more predictable than he hoped but there are a few good laughs in there that elevate it over being an animated version of his podcast. See more Jill M @RT72877215 2 days ago I’ve o my watched a few episodes but it is hilarious! See more Cheyenne H @RT62302449 3 days ago I actually thought this show was well done. The irreverence made me chuckle at least once an episode. I also really enjoyed the point of view of everyday cats in a man's world-- it felt accurate to cats' overall personalities, and they drew upon human imperfection in a refreshing way. Heartwarming in many episodes, relatable in any episodes. I'll be coming back for season 2 if they get the green light. If I was part of the creation of this show, I'd be proud of my contribution. Hats off to Ricky Gervais See more Jazzie C @RT56773742 4 days ago Incredibly poor show. I have been a huge fan of RG for years but this has reached an all time low unfortunately. Not only did it not raise a single ‘titter’ it didn’t even make me smile once throughout. Mrs Browns boys has more depth. See more Teddy L @RT40488086 Sep 9, 2026 Ricky Gervais and his fellow actors never let you down. See more Armando Sadiku Bum Bum T @RT71064837 Sep 9, 2026 5 star just because of all these people hating on it for no reason. This show has the most British humor you could expect but at the same time, ignoring the "rude" language, which some people don't like because probably they're snowflakes, it gives you something to think of. And it's how to live life and look after those you love, orange meeting the kitten and the mom dying made him act different, especially when he got with the girl he wanted he showed his other side. So 5/5 for it being a nice, funny and somewhat rude show and of course because all those woke people. See more Read all reviews
