What to Know

Critics Consensus

Struggling to get out from under the shadow of the original movie, Sexy Beast swaggers with style but can't help but feel like an unnecessary prequel.

James Jackson The Australian 02/20/2024
The kneejerk reaction to all this is to say it isn’t a patch on the film (and it isn’t). But it would be unfair to say the storytelling doesn’t romp along, buoyed by its richly portrayed gargoyles of the English criminal classes. Go to Full Review
Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) 02/02/2024
Almost a quarter-century old, Jonathan Glazer’s broiled British-gangsters-in-Spain crime film is such a definitive work that it’s virtually impossible for a prequel series to match up. Go to Full Review

For a show about a group of thugs, none of it really packs a punch. Go to Full Review

...[Sarah] Greene is to be commended for the strength of her performance. But try as she might, she cannot elevate a disappointing and baffling attempt to expand an obscure art-house movie into a peak TV franchise. Go to Full Review

...every element here is a substantial downgrade on the 2000 version. What’s missing is the arty sense of abstraction that elevated Glazer’s film, Michael Caleo’s try-hard series just isn’t sexy or beastly enough... Go to Full Review

It's hard to argue a case for its existence with its fundamental lack of conversation with the original film. Go to Full Review

Steven S. @sassman Mar 9 I loved this show! I saw the movie many years ago so aside from title there was no relevance. The acting was great. I was sorry that there was only 1 season! See more Jenghis Y @Jenghis Feb 1 This is a mixture of Mobland and Snatch made by TEMU!! See more Damien M @RT53253734 May 5 80’s London gangster romp I didn’t know I needed. Using the origin of Don & Gal from the movie as a starting point it fleshes out interesting parts of the file: why is Don psychotic, how did Gal fall for Deedee and the history of Teddy Bass. It’s not subtle but it’s quite enjoyable. McCardle is very good. See more Lane M @RT31121284 11/25/2024 I love this series, very well done, different in a good way. See more Michael R @RT20874625 08/10/2024 It's a good start to a series with a strong lead character in McArdle. I have a soft spot for British TV series (like CB Strike), so I will overlook some miscasting and weak plot points. I'm looking forward to more seasons of "Sexy Beast." See more Sharon D @RT02128821 08/01/2024 Ignore the critics and prepare to binge watch. This is a very well conceived and orchestrated prequel. Not only is the acting top notch, the actors’ looks and mannerisms are spot on with those in the original movie. James McArdle’s Hal is the perfect young Ray Winstone, even capturing the same confident swagger. Sarah Greene equally plays young DeeDee quite well, although she should have been given blue contacts to match the striking eyes of her original character played in the movie by Amanda Redman. The chemistry between James McArdle and Sarah Greene as is delightfully palpable. There could not have been a more perfect choice to play Ben Kingsley’s Don Logan than Emun Mohammadi, who clearly spent considerable time perfecting the unique mannerisms and intonations of his movie counterpart. The additional characters, their backstories and the plot line draw the viewer in to the extent that binge watching the entire season becomes a must. See more Read all reviews
