What to Know

Critics Consensus

Taut, ambitious, and impressively self-assured, Star City proves a worthy expansion of the For All Mankind universe with its blend of political intrigue and human drama.

Star City has the slow-burn terror of a paranoid period spy drama, with the added theatrics of a space thriller. Go to Full Review

Star City is cold and claustrophobic where For All Mankind is caring and cheerful, which makes for a gripping inversion of Apple's sci-fi drama — inspiring awe of a very different kind. Go to Full Review

The good news is that I felt substantially more engaged by Star City than I have by the parent show the last couple of seasons, and there are clear ways the spinoff differentiates itself from its predecessor besides the setting. Go to Full Review

Star City begs the question, "What if Russia had made it to the moon first?" But perhaps it’s asking far more... The series inherently asks us, "What would you do?" The result is a show that is entertaining but, more importantly, thought-provoking. Go to Full Review

There is some generally good television here even if it wasn’t what I wanted, needed, or expected. Go to Full Review

Despite this downer premise, the series gives us a whole slew of interesting characters, many of whom we end rooting for despite their country’s soul-sucking repression. Go to Full Review

A S @inky.pinky.ponky0310603 1d My compliments for the zeitgeist, cinematography was also very good, acting was also good. Only comment is that the pace was a bit slow from time to time. See more Cyrus Z @zylerzee 1d I never expect much from sequels but this series really delivers. I loved For All Mankind but Star City is in a whole other universe, pardon the pun. It could be the best TV I’ve seen in years. See more Anna F @RT06008662 4d The best show Apple TV has done in years. Much as I loved "For All Mankind," this is even better. I visited the USSR during the brief Gorbachev thaw, and they have gotten the look and feel of the 70s, the grittiness which persisted through the 80s, rendered to perfection. Characters are compelling, the stakes are even higher than in FAM. If Apple does not renew this one show, I'll be disgusted enough to quit. So much better than "filler" like Widow's Bay. THIS is prestige TV. See more Aline L @alnllaee26 4d If I had to retitle this show, I'd call it A Sea of Tears Under the Stars. It made me think of The Count of Monte Cristo. Dantès spends years building his revenge, executes it perfectly, and it doesn't make him happy — because by the time he gets what he wanted, he's no longer the man who wanted it. Everyone in Star City is doing a version of this. They give up a decade of their lives to reach the thing they're certain they need, and the show is honest enough to show them holding it and feeling nothing. That's the real subject here, more than the space race. Sometimes we're convinced we know what we want, and we're simply wrong about ourselves. I'd like to live a life where I knew from the beginning — instead of swinging like a pendulum between reasons for and against, the way these people do. Apparently that isn't on offer. Beautifully acted, patient, unbearably tense on the ground. I'm waiting for season two. See more Odd B @Oddball19 Aug 5 I loved loved loved it. So much better than for all mankind. The acting was fantastic! Once you get past episode 4, it keeps you at the edge of your seat. I hope they will make a season 2. See more Herminia S @RT56789904321 Aug 2 It was great. I stopped watching For All Mankind after season 2 so it was nice to feel like I was watching that show at its peak again See more Read all reviews
