What to Know

Critics Consensus

Taut, ambitious, and impressively self-assured, Star City proves a worthy expansion of the For All Mankind universe with its blend of political intrigue and human drama.

Star City has the slow-burn terror of a paranoid period spy drama, with the added theatrics of a space thriller. Go to Full Review

Star City is cold and claustrophobic where For All Mankind is caring and cheerful, which makes for a gripping inversion of Apple's sci-fi drama — inspiring awe of a very different kind. Go to Full Review

The good news is that I felt substantially more engaged by Star City than I have by the parent show the last couple of seasons, and there are clear ways the spinoff differentiates itself from its predecessor besides the setting. Go to Full Review

In this week’s episode, that promise shines as the show finally brings together all those little arcs to form one coherent narrative. Go to Full Review

Despite some rocky moments early in the series, Star City is trending more toward the successes of early For All Mankind rather than the mess that the series has become. Go to Full Review

T T @tvenjoy 6h Started at a little bit slow for me. But now has me incredibly gripped and I’m know I’m going to be depressed after the last episode of this season. One can only hope that there are some smart people who decide to make a season two. See more Alex P @alexpp3 1d For all mankind’s darker Russian counterpart “If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying” each character seems to have their own balancing act with how far they’ll push the ethics envelope to accomplish goals or desires Except Raskova she dgaf about no one See more David H @RT63874743 2d Overall I’m enjoying the series but space really is more of a backdrop for a Cold War spy thriller, which would be a more accurate way of describing Dark City. There are some writing decisions that are really odd later in the series and makes me wonder if Apple isn’t fully committed to it, and that this will be a one and done spin off. Hopefully that’s not the case but this needs to get back on track as a space drama and not a focus on the Soviet surveillance state. See more Therese J @RT77564232 2d It feels like an exaggerated cold war series that happens to take place within a space agency, rather than a spinoff of For All Mankind which examines space futures in the context of a broader political setting. I've watched the first six episodes now and the characters are too poorly developed to develop any attachment, and randomly throwing in a mission to Venus just throws any credibility out the window, even though seemingly the level of surveillance seems historically mostly accurate. See more Gwen C @gwenner777 3d Am enjoying.every minute. Wasn't sure I'd like it but once I got into it.... Great cast, the acting spot on & the story is really cookin. See more Andrew C @RT02124691 Jun 21 This series has gone downhill steadily since the opening two episodes. If feels like they spent their entire effects budget early on and even then there were gaping holes in what we were allowed to see: zero footage of an actual moon landing, for example. By episode 5 our godforsaken cast are left traipsing seearound forests and wandering in and out of dingy apartments and even dingier offices. Meanwhile the white coated chief designer fiddles with bits and pieces of unidentified kit in a lab of some kind when surely he should be supervising the assembly of vast rockets, launch pads etc? Again a stingy effects budget is surely the culprit. Or perhaps he's realised his plan to send humans to Venus in a bathysphere is completely insane. A final complaint: we are seeing less and less of the always excellent Anna Maxwell Martin as the series proceeds. Maybe their budget for her was also on the low side and she'll end up at the Lubyanka with a bullet in her head in the next ep? See more Read all reviews
