Critics Consensus

Still a bright beacon in the Star Trek universe, Strange New Worlds' third season makes up for its lack of narrative ambition with gleaming execution.

It has everything the discerning Trekkie could want. Epic interstellar battles, dodgy yellow knitwear and alien races with pointy plastic ears that look like they might go warp factor nine near an open flame. Go to Full Review

A show that continues to uphold the ideals of its franchise’s point of origin, even as its swings boldly go nowhere all that deep. Go to Full Review

All that’s left is the fun. Hey, who are we to complain when it’s a show this fun? But “Star Trek” always has had the capacity to be more, and so has this show. Go to Full Review

10 episodes for a couple of "decent" episodes and one "good" episode... this season hurt. Go to Full Review

How does one pass judgment on effective fan service, when the fan is me, and I feel served...yet I can't help feeling it's at the expense of what the TV show at hand ought to be doing? Go to Full Review

It’s got the balance of episodic storytelling and a continuing narrative. But the gimmicky episodes aren’t the only highlights. They’ve given us such lovely characters, played by these compelling actors who just capture the screen. Go to Full Review

Jon L @JonLunatic Jan 21 Admittedly the season had a few gems to appreciate but it definitely left me feeling wanting. The big Gorn cliffhanger was resolved far too QUICKLY and easily for the cliffhanger that lead up to it. Same with the Vezda, a Q level threat from their homeworld built up all season only to be resolved and with a compelling but QUICK deus ex madhina fell terribly flat. Overall though, still holding the torch in the wasteland of cancelled or undeveloped shows fans are still hoping for. It’s not a good time for Star Trek, so I appreciate Strange New Worlds just the same. See more Byron R. @Risico007 Jan 20 Season 3 has some great episodes, some that are good, and some that are terrible. Overall, it’s a solid season with some historic Trek moments and what could have been the franchises’ most evil villain to date… but at the end, there is plenty to build from and still boldly go to the 4th season. See more Christine K. @sci-fi-equestrian Jan 16 A sadder season but still great See more Jenny A Jan 13 I loved this season. The core cast are all brilliant, and I really commend all the actors involved. The writers decided to have fun this season which I thought worked out really well (mostly). Captain Pike's turn as a Vulcan was particularly hilarious, as was Paul Wesley's Jerk-Kirk space captain in the holodeck episode. Ortega's relationship-building with the Gorn in Terrarium was stand-out. I think the only fumble was "What is Starfleet?" because if you are going to ask what the difference is between Starfleet and an imperlial colonising empire, in the age of Trump (and to be true to the show's values, you should be asking that) then don't fudge the ending - have Pike give a speech about Starfleet's core values, not some green film-maker with a grudge because his sister joined up. See more Paul B Jan 12 I'm actually upset I spent money to watch this season. I love Star Trek but it has always been annoying to me because of its episodic nature. If a story arc even exists it's usually referenced in passing but for a few targeted episodes. This season was a mishmash of nonsense featuring puppets, throwback episodes, and rehashed crap from previous seasons and series. I hated Q as a character and the tiresome arc of his presence in Trek. Now we get his son for a fucking wedding episode. The Gorn get lost but for a medical emergency, a shitty murder mystery was plopped in for no good reason (other than a complete lack of creativity), and then it was all topped off with day time Telenovella drama for good measure. Five of the episodes were complete throwaways. The remaining five barely held together a story arc of any kind. I'm really annoyed by the lack of creativity ... What was missing from Strange New Worlds? Answer: New worlds were an afterthought. See more Samu L Dec 20 This is no longer Star Trek — it’s turned into some strange, messy tangle of human relationships See more Read all reviews
