"The Cosby Show" centers on the lives of the Huxtables: obstetrician Cliff and his lawyer wife Claire, their daughters Sondra, Denise, Vanessa and Rudy, and son Theo. Based on the standup comedy of Bill Cosby, the show focused on his observations of family life. Although based on comedy, the series also addresses some more serious topics, such as learning disabilities and teen pregnancy.

The best of the comedy crop may turn out to be NBC's The Cosby Show... The veteran comic brings his relaxed charm to the familiar domestic problems. Go to Full Review
Tom Shales Washington Post 08/09/2021
The program looks at family life without preachiness or moralism but with a gently jaundiced eye that balances the absurdities and anxieties of both parents and children. Go to Full Review

The show has genuine warmth and is rare in that few TV series are centered around an unbroken family. Go to Full Review

It is funny a lot of the time, mainly because Cosby himself has a fine eye for the common comedies of life and a sense of delivery that has made him a millionaire. Go to Full Review

The star is only the most familiar asset. He's surrounded by an impressively bossy young cast which is beautifully directed in at least the first installment. Go to Full Review

Stephen C @bob25009 Nov 20 In memory of Malcolm-Jamal Warner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 24 funny episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See more Gregory S @Gregory566 Jun 17 It sucks that I used to love this show growing up. All I see when I try to rewatch is Bill. And if there is one thing I dont want to see is him. See more Haseeb A @RT14794728 Jun 2 So good love Bill cosby he is America's dad and good human being. For me he was like a second father who made me into the man I am today I always wanted to be just like him thank you bill See more Mike P @RT35394098 11/05/2023 In spite of the unseemly things we've learned about it's star, this is still a classic show for the ages; a loving portrait of sweet, instantly identifiable family, and a hallmark and a turning point for race relations in this country. See more 04/20/2022 love this show and have done since I was little. love the whole family dynamic and I like they feature the older characters. My fave has always been Lisa Bonet as Denise. See more 12/14/2021 In a house filled with love there's always room for more, as proven by the zany goings on that take place in the ever packed Huxtable house. The patriarch and self-proclaimed leader of the bunch is Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable, played by the fallaciously defamed Dr. William H. Cosby. Cliff's drawn-out tall tales, obsession with hoagies, creativeness, and self-satisfying wit earned him the very fitting title of "America's Dad". Always by his side was the beautiful and gracious Clair Huxtable, played by the multi-talented Phylicia Rashad. Let the record show that Clair's toughness, gentleness, and keen ability to see through anyone's tomfoolery kept the family together even through the stickiest of situations. Together, the timeless examples of a parental unit have (four) exceptional children: Denise, Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy. The (second) oldest is Denise, a flaky, eccentrically fashionable young adult with a good heart, a laidback attitude, and an aversion to competition. Lisa Bonet lends her acting talents to this memorable character and adds her name to the list of brilliantly casted actors on the show. The only Huxtable son, Theo Huxtable was best known for his major turn-around from the series's beginning to it's final season. Once an inattentive, work-shy teen fixated on women, he later became a hardworking teacher beset on helping children with learning disabilities. Second youngest is Vanessa Huxtable, the doctor-lawyer duo's, precocious, occasionally rebellious, levelheaded and boy-crazy daughter, played by Tempestt Bledsoe. In my opinion, Vanessa had the best storylines. She was always expected to do good, did good, and ended up having some huge shocker that tested the family's trust, which made her very relatable to me. The youngest and most spoiled child was Rudy Huxtable, played by Keshia Knight Pulliam. Her character always played an interesting part in the show as Cosby was exceptional at exploring perspectives. We got to zero in on Rudy's trials being the youngest in the family, feeling unimportant, coming-of-age, gaining responsibility, and the perks that come with being the baby of the family. I can definitely relate to that. The Cosby Show is an unforgettable watch. The series is worth the watch for Dr. Cosby's brilliance and its source material — all personal beliefs aside. The sitcom's observations of fundamental and relevant themes brings all of the realistic and memorable occurrences full circle. 89%! (SEASON ONE) See more Read all reviews
