What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though the main character may be repellent, Matt Smith makes The Death of Bunny Munro a deviously good time with enough sex, intrigue and genuine drama to be a worthy return on investment.

If you like your TV escapist and cosy, or with some sort of redemptive arc, The Death of Bunny Munro is probably not for you. But the brave will be rewarded: this is crushing, bruising, brilliant television. Go to Full Review

The scenes of childhood neglect and adult selfishness hit hard, but it’s rare to find something so depressing executed so sensitively. Go to Full Review

Like the snake-oil salesman at its heart, Sky’s adaptation of Nick Cave’s novel The Death Of Bunny Munro is a slippery, off-kilter beast. If you can stomach it, Matt Smith’s deranged, thoroughly unhinged performance will take you to hell and back. Go to Full Review

There’s a streak to Cave’s writing that recalls the grotesquery of Martin Amis, Roald Dahl or Chaucer, a fascination with repulsive people and a delight in seeing them get their comeuppance. Go to Full Review
Barbara Ellen Observer (UK) Nov 25
A good lyric has to be potent and immediate, but this concentrated writing style proves overwhelming when applied to a six-hour drama. And unfortunately, although Cave has written powerful songs about women, they are thinly drawn here. Go to Full Review
Ed Power Irish Times Nov 21
There’s an appropriately keening title track by Cave, and the footage of the eternally bleak English seaside is evocative – and yet, much like the novel, the point of it all remains elusive. Go to Full Review

I. A @Ahsoka41 Feb 1 I don't like at all but the story is good at the end.I think that it's hard to wacht. See more kerrie T @Kerrie Dec 26 I found this by accident and so pleased I did. It was so so sad with glimpses of happiness. Matt Smith was brilliant but the boy who played his son....wow!! He was outstanding. Please do yourself a favour and watch this. See more Andrei D @RT74856639 Dec 18 Smith is perfect for the role, the story does not deviate much from the novel, the kid is a little underacted, and the series somewhat fails to capture Bunny's moral and spiritual decline See more Dominic C @RT06952992 Dec 18 This is Matt Smith's finest performance. It's a hard watch but sometimes these things are meant to challenge the audience and make us think - something it definitley does. See more dave g @Dag49 Dec 8 I loved this. Matt Smith was magnificent. It's a dark and difficult watch in the first few episodes where Bunny just seems hopelessly self-centred and oafish but it develops so well to reveal the underlying despair and grief and the last episode was wonderfully theatrical. In the background is an apparent homage to Don't Look Know. I thought it really catches the mood of Nick Cave's music.
