Episode Info

In the premiere episode of The Larry Sanders Show, Larry (Garry Shandling) finds himself under pressure from the network to do a live commercial during his show. Melanie Parrish (Deborah May), the new network executive in charge of late-night programming, is worried about the show's declining revenue, and wants Larry to do a spot for a product called the Garden Weasel. Artie (Rip Torn) suggests they use Hank (Jeffrey Tambor) for the spot instead, as he has a lot of commercial experience, but the sponsors think Hank is overexposed. He doesn't have Larry's "cachet." Larry is reluctant, but admits his insecurities to his wife, Jeannie (Megan Gallagher). "I'm a day away from being the funny guy in Tucson," he whines. He tells Artie that promoting a product he doesn't use might be unethical. "Don't start pulling on that thread," Artie warns him, "Our whole world will unravel." So Larry does the spot, but Melanie still isn't satisfied, and their battle of wills soon becomes violent. This episode was scripted by Peter Tolan (Analyze This), and features a guest appearance by Robert Hays (Airplane!).
