SundanceTV adds to its lineup of acclaimed international series with "The Last Panthers," a six-episode crime drama/thriller shot in four countries -- the U.K., France, Serbia and Montenegro -- in three languages. Starring Academy Award nominees Samantha Morton ("In America," "Sweet and Lowdown") and John Hurt ("Midnight Express," "Elephant Man"), the series plunges viewers into the underworld of modern-day Europe, where a daring diamond heist leads to shocking conspiracies involving European officials, war criminals, city bankers, and jewel and drug traffickers, connecting those in power to even the lowliest criminals. The opening title music is by legendary artist David Bowie.

The Last Panthers is dense and can be hard to follow, jumping around not just in location but in time, introducing more and more characters and complications as it goes. But it pays off. Go to Full Review

Between Thorne's writing, the acting of a stellar cast, and Renck's directing, The Last Panthers becomes something truly special even if, at times, it seems more complex than it needs to be. Go to Full Review

The Last Panthers offers the usual obstacles for the cops and the robbers, but these moments bring a fresh flavor to the crime drama: intractable corporate bureaucracy with a smile. Go to Full Review

The Last Panthers feels like a televisual chapbook on Europe's recent past and volatile present. Go to Full Review

By the end of episode two, I was hooked. This is a stylish, intriguing story that paints a bleak picture of a Europe where morals are questionable and corruption is widespread from the top right down to the bottom. Go to Full Review

The Pink Panthers are indeed real but this TV mini-series is fiction, a sprawling story that opens on a jewel heist in the French port city of Marseilles... Go to Full Review

Andy H @andyhh 09/29/2017 This is a very European series, taking place in France, Serbia and the UK. It is a story of organized crime in Europe and how it operates, law enforcement both private and public, corruption and honor. It has all the ingredients of a very good modern crime story, and for the most part it delivers. While the UK scenes are more peripheral, the France and Serbian are very interesting, especially from an American perspective. It illustrated will the struggles of a decent dedicated French cop that tries to fight organized crime, and corruption, while highlighting his own troubled youth comprised by the legacy of french colonialism transported to modern ghettos and social stratification. It is very good in this aspect. It is also very in using Serbia and Bosnia's recent tragic history of war and conflict and impacts on current organized crime. In a way, there is a sense of Sopranos transported to Europe. The problem, is that the story ultimately falls apart by itself. Despite all its strengths, it turns out to be somewhat predictable after all, with nothing really tying up the story except for simple end to the plot. Ending the plot is not the same as ending the story. Too bad, despite all its very considerable strengths, strong characters and their developments, it ultimately falls flat. See more 04/27/2016 Starts with an old-fashioned diamond heist, but then the series dives deep into the lives of its three lead protagonists and explores the links between crime, war and finance. The characters have enough depth, and the cinematography and music are brilliant. But it somehow fails to build enough tension with ammo of information it has. The various circumstances blur the line between professional and personal in the lives of these characters. Overall, it's intelligent and insightful, and really uncovers the kind of world which perpetuates crime and creates criminals. The series is clear in its message - Intended or not, with or without a choice, once you find yourself entangled in a web of crime, there's rarely a happy or non-violent outcome... unless, of course, you're one of the rich people bankrolling it. The diverse perspective on morality was welcome and commendable; it puts us in the shoes of various characters, and kind of makes the whole journey thought-provoking. Was really intrigued by the connection of real-life instances relating to the 'The Pink Panthers' and the Bosnian War. And really glad that the rise of Eastern European shows and peoples' interest in them led to an international co-production of a trilingual crime thriller. The casting is brilliant; couldn't have asked for better one. Hope it marks the beginning of a new era of internationally co-produced multilingual shows. See more 04/21/2016 Great cast, really good writing and direction. And Europe - but not the Europe you'd see from the window of tour-bus. It's the real deal...Belgrade, Marseille, Antwerp...check it out. See more 03/24/2016 Started well and a good cast but the story line became boring and predictable. Family, love and war but in a plodding format you would be better off watching a rerun of war and peace See more Read all reviews
