The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Season 1 (2008 - 2009)

Season 1
The Secret Life of the American Teenager

Critics Consensus

While The Secret Life of the American Teenager manages to show teens behaving like real teenagers, forced dialogue and an overall lack of originality leaves the show stranded at the border of soap opera parody.

Critic Reviews for The Secret Life of the American Teenager Season 1

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (12)

Nothing about it feels original or even especially timely, and it certainly doesn't reveal any great secrets about society.

Jul 1, 2008 | Full Review…

Shailene Woodley is terrific as the teen in question. Unfortunately, other parts of the show feel so contrived they border on soap opera parody.

Jun 30, 2008 | Full Review…

Campily depicting high school as a den of sluts and predators, "Secret" achieves the noble goal of making sex thoroughly unsexy.

Mar 31, 2020 | Rating: D+ | Full Review…

The show's one legitimately honest gesture was casting what appear to be actual teenagers.

Mar 31, 2020 | Full Review…

While there is a lot of talk about sex on The Secret Life, how it approaches the subject is not particularly candid, nor is it as different as the ABC Family tagline promises. In the end, it's downright disappointing.

Mar 31, 2020 | Full Review…

The series uses Amy's pregnancy as the centerpiece in a drama that's clearly more a painfully obvious, crudely-drawn cautionary tale than any sort of youth soap opera. It feeds into parental hysteria in ridiculously one-dimensional ways.

Sep 25, 2018 | Full Review…

There's also the same sort of ham-fisted writing, stilted dialogue, bad acting, utterly unbelievable characters and lame humor that so often plagued 7th Heaven.

Mar 31, 2020 | Full Review…

Even if there wasn't the splendid Juno to compare it to, The Secret Life of the American Teenager would be pretty bad.

Mar 31, 2020 | Full Review…

Despite its nagging flaws, there is much to admire about the series. Woodley's Amy, first and foremost, is an engaging character and you can't help but root for her.

Mar 31, 2020 | Rating: B | Full Review…

Led by the endearing female lead, Shailene Woodley, the cast is uniformly attractive. The premiere offers a strong soundtrack, some stilted dialogue and some silly and ironic humor that isn't in the league of the hit movie Juno.

Mar 31, 2020 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…

[Some] moments [are] didactic,... But Secret Life does a good job of highlighting the pressure that many of today's teens experience while living in a society that seems to glorify sexual behavior.

Sep 25, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

With so many other teen drama series on the air today,... high school kids pretending to be adults.. it's nice to see a series that addresses real teen issues with characters that behave like real teenagers.

So bad it's good. XD I laughed so hard watching this!

Some funny moments. A lot of awful stereotypes and even worse, incorrect information about the stereotypes in an obvious attempt to cement the stereotypes.

I loved this show and I think this show is the best show I have ever watched. I am trying to get a lot of info about it because I wanna write a book about the TV show. Shailene Woodley does not stink I don't know who said that but she doesn't I think she is the best and she did good acting just like everyone on the show and if anyone from the show is reading this, I love you guys and I hope to meet you guys one day.😜😎😍😘😚

This was the worst TV Show I've ever seen. I'm Happy that the careers of both Shailene Woodley and India Eisley are still intact after this atrocity.

I am so sad this show is over, I would die for it to be back on air

This show is fucking terrible. The writing and dialogue is incredibly unnatural and even worse with the abhorrent acting! The show makes horrible and cheesy jokes that all manage to fall flat, and the delivery from the actors playing the side characters that are basically exaggerated caricatures, The incredibly stupid decisions made by protagonists made me visibly angry, actually ruining my night. This show has terrible role models and is not meant for kids, yet the writing and acting is so bad that there is no way anyone over 10 years old would be able to handle it. This show is so bad it actually motivated me to write this review.

I watched the first 8 episodes of Season 1 and fund the show is very much similar to a soap opera. It's filled with many close up's and teary eyes, surprise at every possible turn... It has some pretty wooden acting as well. The stories are predictable, and sometimes cringe worthy. You have very stereo typical characters. While I often find myself intrigued at the overall stories of those characters, the dialogue and scripts are so bad, I just can't come to enjoy the show. D+
