What all this adds up to in the first half of the fourth season, released on Netflix Wednesday, is a show perfectly tuned for a cultural moment in which darkness (not to mention toxic masculinity) feels inescapable.

Ellie Kemper's bold gameness has powered the show for so long that it's almost easy to take it for granted; even while she's failed to truly grow all that much over the years, her enthusiasm and dedication to the role remains engaging.

Season 4 of "Kimmy," meanwhile, spun its wheels for so long that its last episode felt rushed and forced, forgetting any semblance of heart back in Durnsville.

Kimmy gets an ending she deserves. Because that female is strong as hell.

"Kimmy Schmidt" is itself a kind of anti-fantasy fantasy of New York, celebrating the city's dirt in an era in which even "Sesame Street" has gotten an expensive face-lift, and Lillian is its indomitable Oscar the Grouch.

Though it's sad to wave goodbye, it's better to end with a smile than to become tired of a show you once loved so much. Farewell Kimmy, you've made us all better people.

The real accomplishment from one of Netflix's earlier titles is it proved that, hey, Netflix can, in fact, make a mostly good sitcom.

Sometimes the show doesn't always delve deep into how Kimmy's perspective has been warped by her capture, but what's charming and satisfying about this series is how it allows her to grow.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt ends its run on Netflix much as it began: hilarious, poignant, and criminally underappreciated.

Audience Reviews for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 4

  • Jun 20, 2019
This show started out so strong. But the final season went out with a big load of attention grabs. It seems like they let the actors write the final season. It was a bunch of jumping on the political bashing and trying to make some political statement. It ended so bad that it made me almost forget how wonderful the show was in the first 3 seasons.

I'm sad to see this go, but it leaves on a high note. One of the more underrated things to watch in the Netflix library. Funny, light and on point.
  • Mar 21, 2019
After a lackluster first half of its final season, "Kimmy Schmidt" returns to laugh-out-loud form for its final six episodes. A great ending to one of the most original shows of the last decade.

Jfc. Rapid fire jokes. Background jokes. The dark subject matter drowning in bright colors. One of my favorite shows. My wife didn't know what to expect but she loves it too
  • Mar 09, 2019
I love her in the office, unemployment office.
  • Mar 09, 2019
I really enjoyed this show, every character is perfect in it. I wanted to give more stars but after about half way through season 3, this show starts to lose it's charm and Kimmy starts to get a little annoying. Having said that I still loved her and the whole cast to the end.
  • Mar 01, 2019
this show started off really promissing and the first season is worth watching it quickly devolves into politicized crap, catch the first season and give the rest a pass is my advice
  • Feb 28, 2019
This show is boring and not funny.
  • Feb 22, 2019
The show started getting bad 3rd season but it goes way downhill with this last season and just becomes retarded man and boy hating like other shows now and days to further division. Unfortunate because the show started off greatly.
  • Feb 17, 2019
The last season was actually better than i thought it would be. It was a good way to wrap everything up.
