Critics Consensus

Though it rarely rises above 'watchable,' fans of period crime series may enjoy passing time with Vienna Blood's charismatic cast anyway.

Critic Reviews for Vienna Blood Series 1

All Critics (13) | Top Critics (9)

In such a lusciously detailed show, the slow pace of the investigation doesn't pall; we've got Max's calmly impassive face to admire after all.

When it comes to the TV version, the problems start with the episode length. Ninety minutes feels too long. Then there is the attempt at odd-couple chemistry.

Nov 20, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It is all absurd but enjoyable, the extended length more or less justified by the subplots.

It's pacy, thrilling, and imaginative, like the earlier series of the Benedict Cumberbatch-starring Sherlock, on which [Steve] Thompson also worked.

There's also enough that's novel about the show's cerebral gumshoes to keep viewers rapt, and likely hoping for more.

Jan 16, 2020 | Full Review…

I am more than ready to dismiss the primetime crime series as predictable, lightweight, uninspired and hackneyed.

Dec 3, 2019 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

The chemistry between the two is wonderfully subtle, the older man slowly thawing under the younger man's psychoanalytical gaze. There are excellent performances, too, from the supporting cast.

Nov 20, 2019 | Full Review…

I found it distasteful to watch.

Nov 25, 2019 | Full Review…

We heard about "the psychopathy of the criminal mind" and in due course Max's brilliant deductions revealed the murderer, but it was a long, slow slog.

Nov 25, 2019 | Full Review…

There's an inauthentic, bloodless air to Vienna Blood, and its various parts never quite add up to an emotional whole.

Nov 20, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

With the two detectives hard to like, the 90-minute episode needed to be fast-paced to grip our attention. Despite a clever set-up, the storytelling sometimes dragged. We needed more dialogue and fewer long, contemplative silences.

Nov 20, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Vienna Blood was an oddity, but most oddities can still be intriguing. This raised unexceptionalism in drama to the level of... tempted to say art form but that would be inaccurate. Perhaps the level of pastime.

Audience Reviews for Vienna Blood: Series 1

Detectives. An emerging science. Good actors and storylines. A PBS treat for Sherlock Holmes fans looking for something new.
  • Feb 10, 2020
Love the texture and historical research.

Easily the best Star Trek TV show ever produced (and likely better than any Star Trek movie as well) although it will take time to see how the series unfolds before one can tell if the high praise will continued to be merited.

I like this show and look forward to seeing future episodes.

I have watched the first two episodes, acceptable so far, worth watching...I was stuck between 3* and 3.5* maybe the next episode will move it up. It feels under-budgeted but i'm not sure why, the setting (time wise) must be very expensive and also clothing etc maybe it is due to most of the money spent there, not enough was available, the acting is not top grade but certainly doesn't being you out of the story, and the plots so far have been interesting.

Seems to have just got going - a second series is needed to develop the characters and their relationships ( please). Loved the cinematography, the beautiful locations - and the sense of the beginnings of psychoanalysis and forensics. I thought the acting was first class and the different styles of Austrian and British aesthetics was coming together well.

Beautiful to look at and it's great escapism. I really hope they make another series.

There are two major camps of viewers: Those who receive each frame and line as if they're reading a book, and those who invite distraction and don't want to feel lost when they return. This is a series for readers in which everything adds up and the grand production has no waste. It's involving, well plotted, slyly humorous and totally memorable. For the few UK reviewers who fancy themselves Junior Oscar Wildes, your complaints are boring and your humor dim-witted. The complaint that the 90-minute episodes are too long only reveals that critic as having a short attention span -- would he prefer if it were chopped into nine 30-minute episodes so he doesn't have to concentrate so hard?

Ludicrous, but eminently watchable,if only for the acting and gentle humour, have seen worse and seen better (but I recommend this 75% )
