A police investigation collides with the security services and the Royal Navy in an atmospheric mystery from the makers of "Line of Duty," in which a fishing trawler's inexplicable disappearance leads investigators below the waves into a shadowy world of intrigue. When a crew member is found dead aboard the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, the Scottish police begin an inquiry. The Vigil must remain on patrol in order to maintain the UK's nuclear deterrent, so Detective Amy Silva is forced to join the crew on board to conduct her investigation. Meanwhile, Detective Kirsten Longacre follows leads back on land. As the two pursue parallel trails, the case grows more sinister and broadens to include the highest levels of government and the British navy.

If only the promise of location and actors in this series, were given a plot it deserves. in the first few episodes it seems so, but then unnecessary twists rather than developing any depth ruin what started off so promising. Putting aside the unlikelihood that a couple of very ordinary Scottish police detectives/lovers would be running a case involving the Russian FSB and a bio weapon that could wipe out all life on earth there is plenty to make you weep with disbelief in this one. Already in series 2 I was getting weary of the main characters' gay relationship. Because it was totally lame and unconvincing. Rose Leslie looks like a 14 year old tomboy on a school geography trip (who forgot to put her make up on.) The 12 ish daughter of Suranne Jones character, who is now calling Leslie "Mummy", is bravely bearing the pain of losing her dad (dead) and now being abandoned by Mummy 2 and Mummy 3 (aka Mummy 2's latest bedtime companion whom she "Really loves, even though I'm not very good at it sometimes". Yep. You really aren't, Jonesey.) The plot is so laughably confusing anyway it's like the writers are taking the Mick.
