Ian N @cardtrick Aug 25 This was a superficial series which bypassed so much and focussed on how America won the war - it was America at War. The main positive that it sent me to watch The World at War series again and it is like chalk and cheese. TWaW really does demonstrate its a World at War and why. The episode on Japan and what led to Pearl Harbour was fascinating. Stalingrad episode is a tour de force. In contrast the Hanks series rushes breathlessly past the first 2 years of fighting to get the Americans involved. The talking heads are sensationalist as if the Second World War needed extra sensation. In contrast Laurence Olivier's steady narrative just overlays the hours of worldwide footage. If you are Russian, Japanese, German, French, Brit or any other nationality make sure you watch TWaW See more Mike B @Mike05 Aug 3 This documentary should have been called America's World War 2. For the Pacific campaign Austrlia was mentioned once, yet Australia was the base for MacArthur after he retreated from the Philipines. Austrlia lost 4% of their service personnel in WW2 , UK lost 6% of their service personnel and the US lost 2.5% of their service personnel in WW2. There was a reason it was called WW2 and it wasn't just the geography. Many nations who foutght with the US failed to get any mention or little mention in this documentary. The war had being going for 2 years before the US got involved. Yes, the US did much to turn the tide against the axis powers to win the war. But without the atom bomb that was jointly developed with British help the war with Japan could have gone much longer at greater cost to humanity. I'm not surprised since Tom Hanks was involved, being such a skilled actor and historian. I learned more about this world conflict with this series than I have with all the others I've seen combined. See more VICTORIA N @Victoria1701 Jul 27 As a veteran, I am always interested in watching documentaries and videos about WWII and other conflicts. However, on watching the series titled World War II with Tom Hanks, I was very disappointed in its presentation. I'm at episode 13 and absolutely no mention has been made of the contribution of African Americans such as the Tuskuegee Airmen in the air over Germany. Other contributions may not be seen as significant, but having watched a lot of WWII videos, their contributions seems to be important. Please consider not making those type of contributions invisible. As a teacher, I know students only know what they are taught, so if not taught their history they will not know. Thank you.
