John Anderson Wall Street Journal May 29
This highly ambitious, informative and entertaining series takes the most analyzed, scrutinized, dramatized and idealized event of the 20th century and makes it feel like something you never learned about in school. Go to Full Review

If your knowledge is sketchy, a 20-hour investment in this programme will provide you with the basics. It does feel basic, though: the war is too big for it. Go to Full Review
Joel Keller Decider May 29
As comprehensive as World War II With Tom Hanks seems it will be, even people who consider themselves experts in World War II might learn some new information about the massive conflagaration during the show’s 20 episode. Go to Full Review

Nikolay D @happybanana332211 Jul 13 did you have to make it woke? See more steven M @ww2truth Jul 3 Biased towards the Americans, at times so much that it distorts the real truth. The episode about the air war bombing Germany spends 5 minutes on the British campaign of 1939-1942 and grossly distorts the truth by giving the false impression that the campaign did not properly start until the USA bombers showed up in 1942. Utter nonsense and totally ignores the huge cost of RAF crew in the war. Suggests that only the USA aircrew paid a huge price. Also suggests that precision bombing was not attempted until the US tried it, which is another miss truth. The very first proper precision air raid in history was the astonishing RAF dam-busters raid in 1943, which is not mentioned at all. Very simplistic dumbed down series, not nearly as good or as accurate as the UK series The World At War from the 1970's. I strongly urge you to watch that instead. See more RAD T @RADRAD Jun 9 There are some really interesting nuggets that are in this documentary. But first, the amount of commercials is horrendous. It turns a 30 minute showtime into an hour, very hard to watch. Then there really doesn't need to be wasted time with Tom Hanks' Goth bust shot, with a very serious look for us to hear his narration. Hanks has done some amazing work with the history of WWII, and for that I gave an extra star because I truly appreciate all he does to make sure we never forget. See more Chris G @RT89635948 Jun 9 I’m a big Tom Hanks fan but so far (5 episodes) this feels like a poor effort to replicate The World At War. Lots of authentic footage and contributions from knowledgeable historians. I applaud the determination to educate today’s generations about the dangers of not keeping the far-right in check, especially as the generation who fought WW2 are all but gone now. Worth a watch but then watch The World At War afterwards for a more comprehensive and accurate account of history’s most costly conflict. See more Dmitriy S @theshorin Jun 3 A must-watch! Those who fail to learn the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them in the present and future. See more Rolando R @Rolydamian Jun 2 So amazing to see. History and reality teaching us critical lessons. So much to learn. I hope more of our younger folk see this and come to their own conclusions. See more Read all reviews
