  • Devilishly handsome and with a clipped mustache, silent screen leading man Harry Mestayer specialized in playing attorneys, such as Wife and Country (1918), The Acquittal (1923), and The Locked Door (1929). In the former, which he also wrote, Mestayer attempted to save his wife Gretchen Lederer from a gang of German spies while dallying with nubile secretary Gloria Swanson. A busy stock company player who had appeared opposite the likes of Holbrook Blinn, Helen Ware, and the legendary James K. Hackett, Mestayer entered films with the pioneer Selig Polyscope Company in 1915. His career waned in the late '20s, however, and he was reduced to bit parts after the changeover to sound.
