For filmmaker Matthew Heineman, an inquisitive mindset seems to run in the family. Growing up in New Canaan, Connecticut, Heineman was influenced by his mother, science journalist Cristine Russell, as well as his father, lawyer Matthew Heineman. After graduating from high school, Heineman went on to attend prestigious Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. There, he majored in history, but had only vague ideas about his future career. He entertained notions of becoming a teacher, but his plans were stifled when after graduating in 2005, he was rejected by the Teach for America organization. Heineman decided to pursue his creative inspiration, securing funding to travel the country with three friends in an RV to document the lives and pursuits of young people in America for what would later become his first documentary, "Our Time" (2009). Heineman's travels led him to explore the world of post-Katrina New Orleans. Based on the footage he shot there, he created the video short "Overcoming the Storm" (2006). The film caught the attention of brass at HBO, who hired Heineman to help shoot their documentary series "The Alzheimer's Project" (HBO, 2009). Soon, Heineman was able to produce his next film, a searing indictment of the healthcare industry titled "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare" (2012). The project earned massive praise on the festival circuit, and was even nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. For his next film, Heineman traveled to Mexico to get an inside look at the vigilante groups playing a role in the violent drug wars for his documentary "Cartel Land" (2015).
