A Perfect Getaway 2009

A Perfect Getaway

Critics Consensus

While smarter than the average slasher film, A Perfect Getaway eventually devolves into a standard, predictable, excessively violent thriller.

  • A big-reveal thriller with surprises that really do surprise -- and are worth waiting for through an audaciously long buildup.

  • Writer-director David Twohy (Pitch Black) serves up mechanical thrills culminating in a bogus twist ending

  • Twohy seems to think the eventual revelation is clever enough to be worth the price of admission by itself. It isn't. To give better value, he should have souped up the cartoonish violence of the final scenes.

  • There's a lot of blood and little logic but the actors scream nicely.

An always entertaining cast (Timothy Olyphant, Mila Jovovich, and Steve Zahn) elevates what could have been a mediocre tropical thriller.

The very deliberate "red herrings" scattered throughout the film pretty much guaranteed the twist, so when it happened I was a little disappointed in that regard. Its a weirdly constructed thriller, which does make a lot of the first half interesting because with the exception of a few moments you don't really know what genre the film is. Again the reveal is where things become problematic. Twohly starts shooting the film like its an action movie, which seems to remove any sense of dread that he had been developing. There is also a lengthy flashback that dumps a massive amount of information that's difficult to sort through, which is too bad because there is some really interesting stuff about the killer attempting to transform their identity with each murder, but it fails to go anywhere.

An expert thriller about trust and the dangers of it. Crazy, twisty, gripping, and slam bang. A newly married couple go to Hawaii on their honeymoon and they meet a couple that seem well off. But when they discover a killer is loose, they soon begin to suspect who it is. As they become good friends with the couple, they are not sure what to believe anymore. Suspicions pile on and things seem to make sense. But absolutely nothing is what it seems. One of the trickiest films ever, with a jaw dropping twist you'll never see coming.
