Or, maybe I mean to say that it is not something you would consent eagerly to watch again, even if you admired it the first time. A rather peculiar movie about faith and sexual passion, Breaking The Waves has been dismissed by its director as basically a p*sstake. One can't always trust him to be sincere on the surface. You'll have to make your own mind up. The acting performances are superb, however, even if the plot is hard to swallow. Whatever your religious or spiritual convictions, don't be surprised to find yourself in tears at the end of this one. It is perverse,it might be savage but by all that's instinctive,Waves smashes through the thin walls of jaded skepticism. Voltairein in it's detached study of social cruelty it stands up for purity of sacrifice in the name of love. Never will I hear bell toll so agonizingly beautiful than in in the last 10 minutes of this most cathartic of films. Emily Watson is breath-taking in her role and Skarsgard makes a lovely enigma for her to play off. It's a little bit long, but it takes us on a journey that shakes our very idea of what "true love" can be, what "being religious" can be and even what being "crazy" can be. Whether you are left outraged or uplifted (I fall in the uplifted camp), BREAKING THE WAVES is a tiny miracle of a movie. It shouldn't work so well, but it does. For an adult viewer who loves challenging movies, this should be on your list, for sure! A bleak, profound, spiritual, hugely affecting and unorthodox love story. I was so close to giving it five stars and then it was ruined by a plain awful final scene that really disappointed me.
