This is grand opera cinema, overriding a bit of heavy handiness by darkly expounding a moral purpose and anchoring the proceedings around a great, Oscar worthy performance by Tom Cruise. Bucket up buttercups, this is a wild ride.

Digger suggests that if we remove the protective scrim of illusion, we’ll see the dark truth about who we are and where we’re headed. Fair enough, but Inarritu can’t seem to push beyond cartoonish caricature that fails to pierce the conscience.
