Gerald's Game ultimately argues that monsters are real, and that they can only be defeated (or, at least, "minimized") through direct confrontation. Go to Full Review

Flanagan's thrilling adaptation shouldn't work, but the director's style, plus Gugino and Greenwood's acting, is never less than captivating. The coda works better in hindsight, particularly when it's presented as Jessie's Good For Her moment. Go to Full Review

The performances and writing are so strong that it's the atmosphere that scares you more than anything. Gerald's Game is a great, tense film that doesn't pander or belittle you. It'll make you squirm in all the best ways. Go to Full Review

Dallas H @FozzieMcFly 6h Okay, so it took me seven years to finally get around to watching this movie. I was genuinely curious to see how the movie would unfold when Gerald dies immediately within the first act. I am impressed by how director Mike Flanagan turned this "woman versus self" plot into a feature-length movie and kept it balanced and interesting all the way to the end. Using a mix of hallucinations and flashbacks really helped pad out the runtime while also addressing the emotional aspects of the character's development. The manifestation of her carrying on conversations with the "ghost" of her dead husband alongside a hallucinatory manifestation of herself truly kept the rhythm of the story going in what felt like a very natural progression. Lost a few hours of sleep, for a while, after watching this underrated gem. I love pretty much everything Mike Flanagan does. But the real reason to watch is what King built underneath — misogyny as a red thread, trauma that shapes every adult choice, and a comparison between men and predators drawn to blood that I haven't been able to shake since.
