The reunion of the Guardians cements Pratt's mega-stardom. He has a shaggy young Kurt Russell vibe (think Big Trouble in Little China,). And Russell himself is a great addition to the ensemble, providing a dose of kick-back, kick-ass action

Overall, Guardians Vol. 2 still had elements of the original and even though it started off slow, it picked up steam to a supercharged, somewhat hokey ending.

Guardians of The Galaxy (...) was a unique outlier compared to its homogenized brethren. While Vol. 2 is just as charming, if not more so, it still suffers from many of the same issues that have plagued every Marvel film.

Nothing truly fails to work, even if it never quite smoothly functions. The result is in-your-face pleasantness and fun that is substantially better than most sequels but a cut below the benchmark this series unfairly set for itself.

Women of color are either sexual objects or played off for laughs. Mantis, found by Ego and raised as his servant and 'pet', seems to be written explicitly for the film to indulge in submissive Asian stereotypes.

Yes, in many ways Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is more of the same. And one could argue that we're dealing with some diminishing returns. That's OK; it's still fun.
