Sandler has done some brilliant dramatic work over the years, so it's a pity he persists in churning out such garbage-level comedy. But if Netflix keeps chucking millions at you, what are you going to do?

Sandler surely knew this mildly offensive, juvenile celebration of cheap scares, slapstick gags and bodily function "jokes" was sure to land near the bottom of the large pile of terrible movies starring [himself].

More unexpectedly, it's generally bearable - a light, sweet and nostalgic comedy that is pleasantly devoid of high stakes.

Sandler has always been a repository of goofy voices, but what he thought was funny about the mannered muttering he does here is unclear.

"Hubie Halloween" is a seasonal goodie, and it's more treat than trick.

None of this is particularly original, but nobody said you had to be original to make people laugh.

Oct 22, 2020Hubie Halloween is just another Adam Sandler vehicle where he gets to run rampant with the easy jokes. Netflix has ensured his career has lengthened for additional years, especially as his clout fell after the disastrous Jack & Jill. The film was bearable but pails in comparison to some of the better Sandler films. This felt like a cinematic universe of Sandler characters from over the years. I'm probably being generous with the two stars but I found this easy to watch and not as bad as some of the Sandler films in the last six years. 07/10/2020Brendan O Super Reviewer

Oct 08, 2020Aside from his dramatic turns in films like Uncut Gems or The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), Adam Sandler seems to have lost the spark that made him so great comedically. Ever since he partnered up with Netflix, his string of comedies has been less than stellar, to say the least. I enjoyed Murder Mystery, but most of his outings on Netflix have been very poor. For that reason alone, I had incredibly low expectations going into Hubie Halloween, which is his latest release on Netflix, and sure it's bad, but it also has its moments. Although my overall review and scoring of this film will be negative, just know there are a few redeeming qualities to it as well. Hubie Dubois is the butt of every joke in the town of Salem. Only wanting to protect the citizens on Halloween night every year, his mannerisms and improperly aimed self-confidence ruin all of his credibility. With a looming threat on the horizon that only he can see coming, he must convince the townspeople that he's not crazy. This film gets a little too convoluted even by its own standards, but that's the basic premise. From trying to figure out if werewolves are real to realizing supernatural entities might be to blame, this movie becomes a little more than just a fun Halloween comedy. Films like Billy Madison or The Waterboy has Sandler lending a very funny voice in order to make them stand out. Sadly, his schtick, although still funny at times, just feels more overdone than anything else these days. At first, I sort of found it hilarious throughout the first act of Hubie Halloween, but I grew very tired of the character by the end. On top of that, the humor that's given to everyone just falls flat for the most part, leaving the entire movie on Sandler's shoulders, accenting every moment that doesn't work with him. The supporting cast does lend some funny bits, but this film is just ultimately unfunny as a whole. The best way to describe this film as a final product is to bring up every Adam Sandler comedy in the past. His voice feels like something straight out of the 1990s, an actor reprises his same role from another Sandler flick from the past, and all of the subtle humor just feels rehashed from his other, better films. To put it simply, Hubie Halloween is a Frankenstein's monster version of every comedy he has done before. For that reason, yes, there are moments that had me chuckling, but only because it reminded me of even funnier moments from his other films. Although I laughed, I found it more frustrating than anything. In the end, Hubie Halloween will be arguable for some viewers as the best Adam Sandler has had to offer since he began releasing his films on Netflix, but that's not saying much at all. I watched this movie from start to finish, knowing full well that a Sandler alum had most likely directed it, and low and behold he did. Directed by Steven Brill, who has helmed movies like Mr. Deeds and Without a Paddle, both of which I enjoy, Hubie Halloween is yet another film in his recent filmography to be underwhelming. From The Do-Over to Sandy Wexler, Brill has become a director that Sandler has stuck close to, but I truly believe that a fresh comedic director needs to direct Sandler next is he wants to make a great comedy again. The teams that work on each and every one of his films just make it seem like they're making a film that belongs in the 1990s. Overall, Hubie Halloween may entertain fans of Adam Sandler and his regular guest stars, but this is ultimately another Sandler/Netflix misfire.KJ P Super Reviewer
