Movie Info

When hapless cubicle dweller Cooper (Chris Marquette) awakens strung up in a silky cocoon, he finds himself face to face with a swarm of enormous, man-eating insects intent on devouring the entire human race. It was his first day on the job, but as nervous as Cooper was coming in to work, he never imagined that things could get this bad. Breaking free of his slimy prison with no time to spare, Cooper races to unravel his coworkers before they're all sucked dry like human milkshakes. With a small battalion of terrified office drones under his command, the company's newest employee fights to find a safe haven, and smash as many creepy crawly invaders as possible along the way. Perhaps in the frenzy of this mutant insect invasion, Cooper will finally summon the courage to break the ice with his pretty colleague Sarah as well.

I may talk about this quite a lot in my reviews, but I've always felt that silly or tongue-in-cheek films are absolutely necessary, and maybe even essential. Just as you need films that challenge you and provoke you into thinking about something that may be out of your comfort zone, you need films where you're just able to sit down and enjoy without really thinking too much. That's not to suggest that I justify films like Jack and Jill or Grown Ups 2 for existing, because I still value when effort is put into a script being entertaining. It's known, confirmed by Sandler himself, that his films are, really, just paid vacations. And when you look at your work like that, then you're not really gonna put in much of an effort into acquiring a strong script, cause you simply do not give a flying fuck. But I digress, a film that's silly and tongue-in-cheek (and is also very similar to this one) is 2013's Big Ass Spider. I remember giving that film a positive review when I first saw it. It had a goofy concept, revolved around, you guessed it, a giant spider, and it embraced that silliness. But it was a movie that had a strong script a good cast and a workmanlike approach that were very endearing. I don't wanna say I was expecting Infestation to be similar to BAS, since they're completely different movies made by different people, but I was expecting them to, at least, embrace the goofier aspects. How sad I am to say that they didn't. There's some hints of it here and there, but they just don't embrace it as full-on as they could have. I mean, don't get me wrong, its tongue is still very planted in cheek. It's a movie about giant insect that have taken over the world and they want to harvest humans to feed to their queen at this giant hive. I mean, how ELSE could someone take that movie as anything but silly? It's clearly inspired by 50s insect films. But I just never really got into the movie that much to be honest. I think part of the problem is that the film takes itself too seriously for wanting to be something that's silly. I really do, there's certainly some moments that are comical, but I can probably count on one hand the number of times that the film tried to make me laugh. And that's tried, we're not even talking about actually MAKING me laugh. I suppose the idea is that taking itself 'seriously' will lead to, perhaps, some unintentional laughter, but I don't think it even did that well. There's some really cool practical effects with the insects and gore (mixed in with some CG work, which makes for a good combination). Actually, the coolest scenes in the entire movie involved these human/insect hybrids. Those were really cool to watch and, quite frankly, they were the best part of the entire movie. That should tell you something about everything else that's going on here. I think a major part of the problem is the fact that this is too long of a movie for its own good. This should have been 70-80 minutes long (including credits), at the most. I even remember pointing this out in my review for Big Ass Spider. I said that it was all thriller, no filler. There's plenty of filler and dead space. It's pretty much obvious once you see the movie, you can just see how this would have been better with some cuts and edits. For example, everything at Cooper's dad's place takes up way too much time of the film. Time that could have been used making the film a little more exciting or the characters more interesting. And that's another thing, while the film tried to give Cooper something to do (in that he's grown up and matured since the insects took over), I just wasn't that interested in it. I think that's part of why the film failed in my view. It was concerned about characters as opposed to making the film as entertaining as humanly possible. I know that might be weird, particularly me, when I stress that characters should have something to do, but with the concept this film had, I don't think anyone went in expecting strong character development. Just give the people what they want. Instead of giving the people what they want, you gave them what YOU wanted to give them and that was a substandard creature feature. And I really do mean that. I felt, prior to writing this, that I was gonna give this an average score (2.5), but now I come to realize that it's a 'worse' movie than that. It's not like I'd say that this was bad. Hell, I'd say that it's better than every Sharknado movie ever. It's not bad, but it's just not...good. I don't really even know how to explain it. It's watchable, but nothing more than that. You might be able to get out of this if you're a hardcore horror geek (even though I am and I got nothing from this), but it's too long for it's own good. The fact that it's too long means that it's also, really, kind of boring in a lot of spots. Did I mention there's a lot of filler too? Characters aren't very interesting, even though they try and try and try to do something with them. I don't know what else I can say about this, honestly. This is a below average movie. You can certainly do worse, but with movies like The Void on Netflix RIGHT FUCKING NOW, why would you ever bother with this?

A better-than-average-but-still-not-great Creature Feature that thankfully was vastly superior to the similarly themed and similarly named "Infested" from 2002 that I mistook it for.

I liked the fact that it was fast paced and action packed, but the characters are so annoying especially the protagonist, he's like the worst survivor in the world of killer insect films, I wanted to punch him so badly.

An awesome little horror-comedy film. Loved the story, and the beginning. The pace starts in the first 5 minutes, and never gets old. I loved the whole human-spider formation they did in here, I thought that was pretty clever. The bugs\effects however were a little cheesey, but that's just what makes this film so great. The acting was a little bad, though.
