Insidious: Chapter 2 is decidedly short on the tension and surprises that made its predecessor so chilling.

Most of [Wan's] peers shoot a bunch of scenes and let the editor make a smoothie. Wan no longer relies on visual gibberish. He has become a classicist in that sense. Go to Full Review

Characters in Whannell/Wan screenplays speak with the first-draft expository bluntness of a cheap '50s thriller, letting the characters step on some of the best reveals. Go to Full Review

Veerendra A @VeerAgale 2h This sequel continues the story with more focus on explaining the mystery from the first film. The time-related twists and connections between past and present make the plot more complex. Some horror moments work well, but the scare factor feels slightly weaker compared to the original. Overall, it is an interesting continuation that focuses more on story than pure fear. See more Esra Y @RT95409318 May 13 Direct sequel to the ending of first movie. Downgrading your villain from literal demon to a serial killer from 50s was not exactly thrilling. See more Blake- N @PBSAniDom Apr 16 Insidious: Chapter 2 doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the first film, and it ends up feeling a bit more boring in comparison. The original worked so well because of its tight focus, strong atmosphere, and steady buildup of tension, but this sequel spreads the story in multiple directions and loses some of that simplicity. Instead of relying on consistent scares, it spends a lot of time explaining the lore and jumping between timelines, which can make it feel less engaging. There are still some creepy ideas and a few effective moments, and the cast continues to do a solid job, but the overall suspense just isn’t as strong. It feels more complicated than scary, and not as memorable as the first chapter. I would rate it a 4/10. See more Benjamin W. @Code70 Jan 15 Yo bro, I lowkey didn’t hate this. It was on good authority that this movie was said to have not been very good, and quite a disappointment compared to the first one. And while I partially agree in that it definitely wasn’t as good as the original, I don’t actually think it was bad really at all. It still had scared and tension, James Wan is a master horror-director, so the individual scenes and camera work are all just as good, and I was consistently entertained. Also, I personally found the time-travel elements in it to be pretty darn cool, I can’t even lie. Now sure, it’s not nearly as good of a story as the original, as I don’t think the cliffhanger to the original naturally lent itself to the best sequel. And some ideas were executed kinda disappointingly, like the son saving the dad. But honestly, I thought it was a decent follow-up. See more Madam D @Madam1948 Oct 31 This sequel takes right off where the original stopped. It isn't as scary, but still well done & creepy. Amazing how the look on some of the "ghosts" faces are enough to make me freak a bit. See more Alexander S @RT61935749 Oct 20 Insidious: Chapter 2 is a worthy follow-up that preserves the spine-tingling tension of its predecessor, even if the storyline doesn't quite live up to the first film's standard, that’ll likely leave viewers with a sense of déjà vu rather than a truly novel experience.
