  • Still, if the film is ultimately disappointing it is in part because it begins so well, and there is a lot to enjoy before the over-the-top final act.

  • Led by Downey's career-resurrecting performance as billionaire weapons peddler Tony Stark, it proves just as indispensable to the movie's giddy escapist appeal as the seamless CGI effects and eye-popping pyrotechnics.

  • Iron Man manages to be both a lot of fun, and quite possibly the most effective commentary on the war on terror that Hollywood has produced so far -- not the best argued or the most committed, but the one that most people will see, and think about.

  • There's a satisfyingly climactic CGI battle, but Downey Jr tops it in the witty denouement with pure acting skill.

The film that began the Marvel Cinematic Universe couldn't have been done better. Amazing job behind the camera by Favreau and a perfect casting for Tony Stark in RDJ. Smart script and well exercised character development, especially with Obadiah Stain.

A movie that started MCU and to this day it is one of the best MCU movies. Robert Downey Jr. is amazing as Iron Man, and other cast is doing pretty good job. Story is really good. It has humor, action and easter eggs. Visual effects are great. It is entertaining movie for comic book lover and definetly must see.

Iron Man was great! Almost every aspect worked and this film floored everyone including me and it was a perfect start to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Positives: 1. The casting (except for one character which I'll get into); Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man is some of the best casting I've seen! He captures the character from the comics perfectly while also injecting his own mannerisms as well! He is a dick but so likable and he has a great sense of humor throughout the film and he does have moments where you honestly do feel for his character! Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts was great, she does an exceptional job as her character. She is natural while also having this charisma about her. Jeff Bridges was awesome as Obadiah Stane, you bought him when he was a good guy and when he eventually turns into a baddie he does a great job as well. All the other casting is fine for the most part. 2. The story, pacing and tone; the pacing is well done, there is no moments where the film drags for me. The story is very smart surprisingly, I liked how this film actually felt like a movie and deviated away from the typical superhero cliches which is another thing I want to get into, this film stays away from cliches. The characters' dialogue feels natural and it never feels forced and cliche. Hell in the end of the film Tony just flat out says he's Iron Man, which was shocking at the time because normally superheros hide their identity and it was so refreshing that they went for a different direction with this film. 3. Visuals; This film is shot well, it has this richness to it. Also the special effects and CGI is well done, not much to say here. Negatives: 1. Terrence Howard as Rhodey. I have nothing against Terrence Howard, he's a really good actor but he just didn't fit the character in my opinion. I just didn't buy him as this military colonel. But for the most part he is a decent character. 2. Obadiah's sudden transformation into a villain. There was no real build up to it and it was so sudden. It felt kind of shoehorned in and I felt it could've been handled better. 3. Gwyneth Paltrow's acting when she is getting chased down by Iron Monger and is close to getting hurt by him was so bad in my opinion. It didn't look like she was scared and it felt very forced, she gave this tennis ball type look to him, though granted he was CGI but I felt this was inexcusable. I'm not saying she should overact, but the acting could've been more convincing for this scene. Overall: Iron Man is one of the best comic book films I've ever seen and definitely one of the best MCU films! This film is very well acted and packed with a smart script and all of that lends to a great movie!

Iron Man is one of those films that gets better with age. Even though I loved it upon first viewing, I wasn't all that pumped about going back another time. There's been so many MCU films now that it's hard to imagine one without numerous Marvel superheroes in them, but that's what is so brilliant about Iron Man. It can easily stand on its own as a singular superhero adventure, but it also presents the universe as somewhere that could have dozens upon dozens of heroes. At this point, it's hard to think of anyone else in the Iron Man suit but Robert Downey Jr. But it may be equally as hard for Downey to find a role more suitable to his acting strengths than Tony Stark himself. With the recent announcement that Downey will indeed be in the next Spider-Man installment, I can't hope but help he plays this character forever, in every Marvel film. A mixture of humor, wit, sophistication, and absolute charisma, Tony Stark may be the most engaging character in the MCU. With all that said, we only get to the rest of the MCU films if the first Iron Man works, which it does. I love the way Jon Favreau sets the tone for the MCU as undeniably dramatic but with a good amount of comedic undertones so that it appeals to all ages and demographics. When the plot of the film involves a billionaire who develops tech and weapons that end up killing many innocent people, you need some comedic relief to give the film smooth pacing. Favreau also manages to develop a romantic superhero relationship that is something you truly care about without overselling it, an admittedly difficult task. Pepper and Tony aren't your typical superhero damsel in distress type of relationship, but they also don't try and turn it into something it isn't. It's teased just enough in this movie to keep those invested something to hope for in later installments. Of course, Iron Man is one of the best superhero films of all time, but it's also just a really well made film. Sure, the villain, in the form of Obadiah Stane is nothing special, but Marvel has never had the easiest of times creating great on screen villains. But as a whole, Iron Man is phenomenal work of cinema that only gets better with age. It serves as a reminder that you can make a serious superhero film and an enjoyable experience at the same time. +Downey Jr is Iron Man +Romantic relationship that you care about +Perfect tone setting up the MCU 9.3/10
