I remembered Henry Cavill was good, but I didn't remember he was THIS good. Henry is a very good fit for Superman, and I wish I could say he was a really good Clark Kent, but I feel we don't see enough of him as Clark for me to properly appreciate his portrayal of Clark. I don't love the flashbacks intercut with the present day stuff, but it's done in a pretty satisfying way. Another standout of this movie is Zod. He's a very interesting villain that is so good because his cause is somewhat noble, but it's his methods that are corrupt. Unfortunately, I feel Amy Adams delivers a boring and forgettable portrayal of Lois Lane. She plays the damsel in distress/ Superman love interest well but I feel we don't get to see the real witty reporter side that really characterizes Lois. But that's a very minor complaint. Back when every damn movie was doing building smashy smashy with no consequence and characters that are interacting with each other for some reason. It's not a 'fun' film. By the final act, the nonstop fighting between Superman and Zod just turns into endless buildings collapsing, and it gets exhausting rather than exciting. Another problem is the tone. The film is so dark and serious that it loses the hopeful spirit that Superman is supposed to represent. Instead of feeling inspired by the character, the movie makes everything feel heavy and grim. The pacing is also strange. The constant jumping between flashbacks and present-day scenes makes the story feel disjointed, and it’s hard to stay emotionally connected to Clark Kent because the narrative keeps interrupting itself. Overall, Man of Steel has great visual effects and a talented cast, but the overly dark tone, messy pacing, and excessive destruction make it feel like a missed opportunity for such an iconic hero.
