11/09/2009 Let me first say... this is not really a film per say (at least not in my thoughts), more it is an idea.... a study as you will of ... perceptions/angles. At over Two hours long, there are basically only five shots (okay, perhaps seven, but one is a repeat of the first one... you know the whole full circle thing...) in the film, all stationary, and none of them (okay one of them did actually show the faces of the family for about five minutes... the shortest shot of them all) showing much more then hands, waists, knees and the central action of the film... the making of dumplings on the table. As the movie starts you begin at the head of the table... one shot, no moving camera..... an hour later, you switch to the next side, then the next then the next, then under the table and finally back to the beginning shot. Along the way you are treated to a family of people whom for 137 minutes make dumplings... from the prep of the ingredients that go in them, to the making of the dough and the outer casings, to the cooking and finally the eating... and in keeping with perspectives we learn how one should roll, cut, shape, stir, kneed, place, cook, stir (all things imaginable and not) these dumplings from all three of the family members... Sound a bit boring and so what-ish? Yes, perhaps, but so then why was I never bored and never thinking it was far too long or meaningless? Try as I might to explain it, I can't for the life of me understand why I liked it, but I did, and the other seven (oops six, I was the seventh) people in the showing I saw at the festival seemed to like it to.... .....who knew perspectives could be so damn interesting..... even the most mudane of types.
