An interesting take on the superhero-action thriller, "Ra. One" takes a shot at one of the most popular film genres currently thriving in American popular culture, but offers a more unique, non-Western perspective. The film focuses on the interactions between Prateek (Armaan Verma) and two characters; his father, a nerdy videogame designer named Shekhar (Shahrukh Khan), and the figure who eventually comes to life from Shekhar"s videogame, G. One (also played by SRK). The story follows them as they attempt to escape from and fight back against the film"s antagonist, another escaped videogame character known as Ra. One. The film does a fantastic job of borrowing its actiony-elements from other popular superhero and videogame films, from its costumes to its fight scenes, while still managing to create a hero and villain that are inherently "Bollywood." Both Ra. One and G. One had rather comedic interactions throughout the film that involved them learning about and analyzing cultural and religious Indian traditions. However, the overarching theme of the film is a somewhat serious, if not dark one. Comparing Ra. One to other action-centric films, such as the 2004 action-comedy "Main Hoon Na," demonstrates an interesting look at just how serious the tone of the film is. In Main Hoon Na, a film about characters working to prevent a war breaking out amidst India-Pakistan conflicts, the overall tone manages to remain relatively light-hearted until the final arc of the film, even throughout all of the action and emotion. Ra. One has far more serious undertones, with the characters spending the majority of the film fleeing in fear. The film does nicely at displaying how Indian morals and values are able to help one overcome seemingly impossible odds, and does so in a refreshing and exciting manner.

Anubhav Sinha's big budget Bollywood blockbuster Ra. One is a fun futuristic action movie, that doesn't take itself too seriously and remains true to its Bollywood roots. The story of the film follows a videogame designer Shekhar Subramanium played by Shah Rukh Khan who must design a new commercial video game to impress his boss, his son Prateek, played by Amaan Verma and his wife Sonia, played by Kareena Kapoor. After being killed by a rogue video game villain he created by the name of Ra. One, a play on the name of the infamous villain from the Ramayana Ravan, Shah Rukh Khan returns to the film this time playing as the video game character come to life G. One, who has been brought out to stop Ra. One. Overall a very fun entertaining movie, Ra. One is highlighted by its very strong visual effects. The CGI in this film is something new that few Bollywood movies have been able to do, and so it allows for very creative and extravagant fight scenes that prove to be some of the best parts of this film. Despite these high budget Hollywood esque special effects, Ra. One stays true to its Bollywood nature and serves the audience a strong melodramatic story with a self aware campiness that makes it a very fun film to watch. Shah Rukh Khanâ(TM)s transition from the well intentioned but awkward game designer Shekhar, to the bold heroic but out of place G. One, epitomizes the actors great performance as he is able to flourish as to completely unique characters. The casting of Shah Rukh Khan for a Bollywood movie as high budget and wide reaching as this one makes sense as in her essay âShah Rukh Khan: A Global Iconâ? Anupama Chopra states âBollywood has found a major market abroad over the last two decades, and superstar Shah Rukh Khan has become Bollywood's most recognized and bankable face for global audiences.â? (Chapra). Khanâ(TM)s star power and acting ability drive the movie forward as his ability to make audiences laugh as the rigid and confused G. One, and make up for the slow pacing of the middle section of the movie. Despite some minor pacing issues the plot of the film is solid, and while it is nothing special it does the job in allowing Shah Rukh Khan and the filmâ(TM)s strong visual effects enough space to make the movie a hit. Similarly to Amar Akbar Anthony the film works to create a moral setup in which the audience can understand that family extends to more than just blood kinship through Soniaâ(TM)s eventual acceptance of G. One after the death of her husband. Overall a very fun film I would recommend to anyone who likes Bollywood, or likes action movies in general.

Ra One: A new look with a classic formula Ra One is a nonstop action film with a virtual twist on the archetype of a Bollywood film. The film stars Armaan Verma (Prateek) as the young son of an author, Kareena Kapoor (Sonia), and then Arjun Rampal (Ra One). Shah Rukh Khan is featured in a double role, first as Prateek's father (Shekhar), a game developer who is looking for a breakout, and then as G. One, a video game protagonist come to life, both of whom turn out to be quite the klutz. If you enjoy Hollywood films like The Matrix, Mission Impossible, or Transformers, you might enjoy the gratuitous amount of action shots in this film. Although this film has very modern graphics, it still adheres to some of the core values found in Bollywood film, even such as in Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham. In K3G, the main characters, also including Shah Rukh Khan, journey from India to London, and then back to India at the end of the film. In that film, as in many Bollywood films, India is portrayed as the motherland, and the Western world is foreign and "bad". In, "Shah Rukh Khan: A Global Icon," Anupama Chopra argues that Shah Rukh Khan's roles are the epitome of striking a balance between those two extremes. Ra One fits exactly into that mentality, although it reverses the direction of the journey, from London to India and then back to London. This is not to vilify India instead of London, but rather to show that an ideal Bollywood family can live in either place.

Indian filmmakers do make films which strike chord with the audiences, and they do this thing with all the genres. Anubhav Sinha does the same with the Tamil film RA - 1, which isn't just a great film, but also raises the bar of Indian action and science fiction movies to a next level, and also at par with Hollywood. RA - 1 narrates the story about the relation of a father and his son, and how are they affected by the torment of a video game villain called RA - 1, when he emerges out of the game. Such subjects need to be handled with care. Anubhav Sinha has managed to do that efficiently. Shah Rukh Khan is just amazing, brilliant and terrific, both as the meek father, and the superhero. He delivers a great performance and gives the viewers the feel of a superhero. Arjun Rampal as the main villain does perform brilliantly. He is superb in every part and cool action with visual effects add to his character's intensity, which can be seen in case of every actor. Kareena Kapoor's role is good and she does it well. Her portrayal of a stylish mother worked well. Besides, Armaan Verma, the surprise package of this film, rocked it completely and managed to steal the show with his awesome histrionics, performance and stunts. Coming to music, this one is another terrific yet entertaining soundtrack from Vishal and Shekhar. The lyrics penned by Vairamuthu manage to do justice to the music and adds to the flavour of the film. Coming to its biggest plus points, the action and the VFX are perhaps the best ones I have ever seen in any Indian film. You will hardly find any flaws in the visuals of the film. Both the action and VFX have been executed with brilliance at par with Hollywood. Coming to the storyline, Anubhav Sinha deserves a special praise for bringing something new and different in front of us on the big screen. Besides, the dubbing provided by Shah Rukh Khan seems too original and you hardly feel as if you are watching a dubbed film. Overall, RA - 1 is a complete entertainer that has biggest strength in its content and is a different kind of superhero film. Go, watch it with your family, in better sound and video system! Rating: ????? (5/5)
