There Have been a lot of parodies of Robin Hood. However Men in tights is definitely one of the best. Cary Elwes is the perfect Robin Hood. Because unlike other Robin hoods he can speak with an English accent. When Robin Hood and his merry men sing the Men in tights song it's LOL. Most people probably don't know that Mel Brooks writes a lot of the songs for his movies. It's a shame that Mel Brooks doesn't make more movies. He's definitely one of the Kings of parodies. In a way it’s like an American version of Monty Python. If you don’t like things that you can’t understand, and therefore are funny, it may not be for you. But for me, most of the jokes are straight up normal jokes, don’t require a whole lot of thought. It is certainly absurd. But it’s quite watchable, simply because Carey Elwes is so good at everything he does, and he plays this role just beautifully. The jokes hit about half the time; when they land, they can be pretty fuckin’ hilarious, but there are long stretches where the humor misfires or just feels stretched out. It’s less a tightly plotted film and more a loose series of sketches and running gags, and by the end it does overstay its welcome. The best jokes are the subtle ones: Richard Lewis’s ever-shifting mole, the complete lack of period authenticity, and Dave Chappelle (so young here!) playing Ahchoo with a ridiculous backwards-cap bycocket. These quieter moments often land better than the broad, over-the-top slapstick. Unfortunately for us modern viewers, a lot of the film’s humor depends on early ’90s cultural winks and pop-culture references. At the time, those probably felt very fresh, but now some of it just feels obscure . Watching it today can be a little baffling, like watching Deadpool in 2050 or something. Overall, Men in Tights is entertaining and affectionate as a parody. It’s not genius-level Brooks, but it has charm, a few solid laughs, and some clever bits that make it worth rewatching if you’re in the mood for light, nostalgia-tinged silliness.
