Movie Info

"Strange Magic," a new animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects. (C) Disney

The best Lucas film in 25 years: funny, idiosyncratic, hippy-dippy, packed with creatures and visions worth beholding.

Strange Magic isn't very magical, but it sure is strange.

I know we're talking about fairy tales here. But why does the king, who resembles a cockroach and talks like a Scot, have a mother who seems to be a slug and talks like a Jewish-mother joke?

Audience Reviews for Strange Magic

Absolutely adorable movie! Although there may not be much going on under the surface, that is a good thing for a movie such as this. It's heartwarming, touching and teaches a valuable lesson in love. This is a great movie for families and children alike!

This film was recommended by several friends to me and I was not disappointed. It is gorgeously animated, has fantastic music and a sweet plot. And most of all: the characters. There are strong girls who know what they want. None of the characters and their actions are truly malicious (which you are just not used to anymore! and it was such a refreshing change from the usual). I love this movie and have watched it several times. I recommend it to anyone that likes musicals and a bit of loveliness.

This movie started off great for me, it has a lot of good ideas, nuanced character design, and beautiful animation. I didn't even mind the jukebox musical aspect that much. I liked the message of recognizing the difference between infatuation and real love based on respect. It's also got some really nice humor that isn't rude or slapstick, which is refreshing. However it does feel like it was shelved halfway through. It felt like the creators wanted to do so much more with it but either ran out of money, inspiration, or support from Disney (no surprise there). A few of the plot choices and dialog towards the end felt very much as though a producer rewrote it because they didn't like the non-traditional way it was going. But it has some amazing Beauty and the Beast themes that I love, with a dash of Midsummer Night's Dream that keeps it somewhat familiar despite the crazy characters and setting. All in all it was a movie I wasn't sure I liked the first time I watched, but then... I watched it again... Same night. And I think I've watched it about 20 times since then and showed it to all my friends. So take that for what you will.
