What to Know

Critics Consensus

Packed with colorful world-building that's as frenetic as it is weightless, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's visuals are often out of this world but the threadbare story ultimately loses its Milky Way.

It looked quite lovely and is really for little kids -- even more than the first one. Go to Full Review

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie settles for moments of visual inspiration that replicate the little rushes of opening up new worlds in one of the games, while letting almost every character stagnate into bland affability Go to Full Review

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is undoubtedly a visual assault—and whether that’s appealing or revolting is up to the individual—but there’s no denying the creativity and energy on display. Go to Full Review

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a visually dense, high-energy spectacle that ultimately mistakes constant stimulation for storytelling, building out a galaxy of ideas without giving any of them the gravity to truly land. Go to Full Review

Logan 3h I just wish it had a better and more put together plot instead of just a video game Easter egg movie. Love Bowser he’s a great father and villain. Bowser Jr was kind of aggravating. But the rest was alright. 👍 See more Richard 4h The Super Mario Galaxy movie succeeds because it respects the source material while expanding the universe in a way that feels natural and entertaining. Rather than reinventing Mario, it stays true to the spirit, characters, and limits of the games while building its own storyline around them. The visuals, humor, and sense of adventure capture the charm that made the franchise so popular in the first place. My only criticism is that the story plays it very safe. While that works for a family audience, there is room for a more mature narrative with deeper character development and higher emotional stakes. Future installments could explore more adult themes without losing the fun and accessibility that define Mario. Overall, it's a faithful adaptation that honors the games while successfully creating its own cinematic adventure. See more Michael 5h Grew up with Mario video games so this brought me a lot of joy! See more Stephen M 10h Big on graphics and action, weak and predictable storylines. Frenetic pacing, ADHDs dream movie. Probably a lot more fun if watching while on some of those magic mushrooms featured in the film! See more Aja 21h It was the best movie kids I have ever seen I love super Mario bros 2 See more JUSTIN 1d They threw a little too much into this one. Yoshi and Luigi dancing to "that's amore", great! King Wart for about ten seconds, okay, a T Rex chase scene, what? By the time they got to Starfox they had really lost me ... Starfox is cool, but not mario at all. Music wasn't as good as the original, but that's probably because the owners of eighties music wouldn't license their songs for less than a million dollars. Despite all that, I really enjoyed the movie. It was fun, and that is what you want out of a kids movie. See more Read all reviews
