Seems to honor the now compelling, yet unseen original for millennials' taste that fueled the contemporary update amid the genuine stunning production value with Matthew Lillard always an energetic source to rely on, only to find it as an extreme funhouse that requires a waiver without any frightening intention. (B)
I personally liked this movie very much. Throughout the movie, there is an amazing backstory for each ghost. The compelling mystery within the house and the mischievous actions from the uncle. Only being able to see the ghosts with the glasses is an amazing callback to the 1960 original. Besides the actual story line, the makeup for the characters is amazing.
Extremely boring and not quite worth the watch
I loved it when it came out... i got the scare, thrill, and excitement... still one of my favorite movie till now, wish they will release it in 4K
This is a remake that SHOULD have been Great with cool effects, wild ghosts, and a crazy clocklike every changing magical/haunted house.
But some poor editing and underdeveloped story made it fall flat.
It's still worth the watch, if just for you to think of how you could improve it.
This is your classic late 90's early 2000s horror "scary" film.
The overall acting is not bad, not award worthy but you can watch this without face palming.
The makeup done for this show is truely great, although the blood is obviously fake, the ghosts look REALLY cool and terrifying.
The overall plot line was mediocre, pretty straightforward without large plot twists.
Overall this movie is a solid watch, great for Halloween time or if you want a not so scary but scary film to watch.
Thir13en Ghosts (2001): 4 out of 10: Fantastic set design and creative character (ghost) make-up effects cannot save this deafening, over-edited mess.
The cast ranges from the where is my paycheck crowd (F. Murray Abraham and Tony Shalhoub), to the disappointedly clothed (Shannon Elizabeth about ten years too old to play a virginal teenager and a very cute Embeth Davidtz), and remarkably irritating (Alec Roberts playing a little boy you wish would just die.)
One-upping Alec Matthew Lillard manages the most irritating role he has ever performed, and that's saying something. Finally, we have female rapper Rah Digger channeling every offensive black maid stereotype and inventing a few new ones. (Come to think of it a black maid is so 1960's anyone who is anyone has a European au pair.) Yes, the good old black maid stereotype, Digger is apparently channeling Beulah from The Horror of Party Beach. She states she ain't washing no windows (It's an all-glass house), and for you film historians out there she doesn't birth no babies either.
On the plus side, the ghosts, etc. are very well done; however, they don't have nearly enough screen time and look a bit like the cast of Hellraiser is moonlighting. The set design with a large glass house with beautiful Latin writings on the walls is where the movie shines.
I suspect in a haunted house movie it is the ghosts and house that are the real stars. It is a shame that they had to include this plot and these characters. Truth be told it would have been a better movie without them.
All time favorite horror movie. Love that the DVD has the ghost files.
Thirteen ghosts is by far one of the best horror movies of our generation.
not scary, terrible, useless, quick cut editing with dumb jump scares. terrible acting. madness story. just dumb (2 viewings)
