In the seventh millennium, A.D., Galactica is the only surviving battleship after an attack by the evil Cylons. As a result of the attack, peace and most of humankind have been wiped out. Led by Commander Adama, Galactica, as well as a couple hundred smaller ships flee to try to find refuge on the legendary but unknown planet Earth. The Cylons, with the help of the equally evil Count Baltar, are in hot pursuit.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bearing an unflattering resemblance to another space opera set in a galaxy far, far away, Battlestar Galactica offers little more than cutting-edge visual effects.

Star Wars was a masterpiece of instant mythology; Battlestar Galactica must settle for being merely a handsome, engrossing, super-duper television show. Go to Full Review
Garry Shelley Sydney Morning Herald 09/09/2021
Although Battlestar Galactica does not have the humour of Star Wars, which it unblushingly apes, it does have similar technical aspects and special effects which are nothing less than brilliant. Go to Full Review
Nancy Banks-Smith Guardian 09/09/2021
Battlestar Galactica has the twin virtues of economy and humanity. It is evidently shot in an amusement arcade (Wham! Splat!) and gives employment to old actors you have heard of, who would otherwise be keeling over on golf courses. Go to Full Review
Win Fanning Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 09/09/2021
Although Battlestar Galactica is without question a ripoff from [Star Wars], it is well enough done to stand very tall on its own. The plotting and editing are simply brilliant and the performances on a high plane indeed. Go to Full Review
Harold Schindler Salt Lake Tribune 09/09/2021
After the first hour and a half of superb special effects, the remaining hour and a half seemed devoted to a youngster whose only dialogue was "We can't leave without Muffy!" as he pursued a rather undisciplined dog across the scenery. Go to Full Review

Jay H @RT70414899 11/23/2023 I loved this series when it first aired. I was 5. Now? Not so much. The premise is way too pedestrian: humans are good, Cylons are bad. Pew-pew-pew! See more badgamer 1 @badgamer1967 07/12/2023 As a 12 year old in 1979 in a backwater town in Australia I saw star wars the year before at my local drive-in and was transfixed by it. Then came Battlestar Galactica onto my TV set and I was blown away so much so I would skip my weekly scout meetings to watch it..all before vcr's. The sets the special effects the commanding Lorne Greene as Adama, Starbuck and Apollo it was a young lads fantasy overload loved it. Fast forward to 2004 and the reimagined battlestar galactica made me forget my 1979 childhood favorite as it was Sci Fi redefined dark moody political. But it still has a special place in my heart and certain episodes are still awesome especially the pilot movie which I've watched literally countless times. See more 02/22/2022 Great series enough said. See more 04/23/2021 It's good to see this series again after so many years. Although it isn't as good as Star Wars it is still an enjoyable series. It's a bit corny and some of the acting is a little dodgy but some of the episodes are great. The two parter about the gun on the ice planet is my favourite. The recent updated series has better effects and acting and a deeper more complex story. Yet I still prefer the old series. It is more fun. See more 10/24/2020 Battlestar Galactica (1978) is an undeniably classic piece of sci-fi history, and rightfully so. The short lived yet impactful series has decent plots, plenty of action, and even provides a laugh from time to time. Now I'd like to point out that they do not over use the comedy making the rare laughs feel special in a way that kindles heartfelt joy. There is something for everyone to enjoy in this show. I highly recommend Battlestar Galactica (1978). It's a must see for science fiction fans and I believe many people who are not sci-fi fans would enjoy it too. See more 02/24/2019 Holds up well even after multiple rewatches. Campy but engaging, and seldom forgets that serialized TV series are all about the characters. And what glorious characters we have here, James Colicos as an over the top baltar, managing to portray a true evil villain without getting campy. Dirk Bendict as the cigar chomping overconfident starbuck. Lorne Greene as the fatherly leader Adama. Charismatic patrick macnee as the mysterious count iblis. I could go on and on. The only downside is the heavy and obvious re-use of effects cuts. See more Read all reviews
