Tv Season Info

Series 2 opens on a festive day in 1958: Jenny's birthday, which means cake with her Nonnatus House friends and a movie with Chummy, Trixie and Cynthia. Her return to work the next morning is anything but fun, however, as she finds herself caring for a pregnant woman who's in an abusive relationship. Among the other challenges she tackles: delivering a baby with spina bifida; helping a man who lost most of his family to tuberculosis; and caring for a Jamaican mother-to-be with prejudiced neighbors. She also assists an intimidating doctor on the male surgical ward of short-staffed London Hospital for a time; and meets a young man who has eyes for her. Life is equally harried for Jenny's colleagues: Cynthia is suspected of malfeasance after a baby she delivered dies; newcomer Jane Sutton (Dorothy Atkinson) attracts the attentions of a vicar; Sister Bernadette develops feelings for Dr. Turner and catches tuberculosis; and the staff deals with identical twins who share a husband. Chummy, meanwhile, leaves Poplar with new husband Peter to pursue her missionary dreams, then returns with surprising - though not totally unexpected - news.

Sweet and heartwarming (and heart-wrenching), Call the Midwife is a lovely look at female friendships.

This superior soap about the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House is still defiantly worthy and faintly patronising.

It's all very nicely shot, but there's both a dreary worthiness and a quaintness to Call the Midwife, wrapped in a kind of sentimental greetings card morality.

Call the Midwife is a celebration of life

Aug 11, 2017 | Full Review…

Call the Midwife continues to be a highly enjoyable story about a very specific and underrepresented group of women in a time when their independence and skill was the exception.
