[Confronting a Serial Killer] too often succumbs to overheated writing and presentation ... but [it ] gets to the core of a true tragedy in this country. Go to Full Review

STREAM IT, with the caveat that we're hoping that Confronting A Serial Killer delves more into Little's life and motivations and the fact that murders of women in marginalized groups are so readily dismissed. Go to Full Review

Confronting a Serial Killer makes a strong case for systematically reappraising unofficially disenfranchised communities. If the survivors who came forward weren't devalued by the system, Little would never have been able to kill 93 victims. Go to Full Review

Andy R @AndyRyan Dec 18 The daft thing about this is that the subtitles only applied to the narrators voice, the unintelligible voice of Sam Little over the telephone renders the film almost unwatchable. A wasted opportunity. See more 04/12/2022 This documentary is really just about the author. She just talks about herself most of the time. So unless you want to know about the life of Jillian Lauren then I suggest you watch a different documentary. One about Sam Little and his victims perhaps. See more 01/18/2022 The material is fascinating as it is exceptional: the most prolific serial killer in the United States who went undiscovered for decades, confiding in a woman he barely knows. And her total commitment in listening to him. Years of daily calls, weekly visits, and we watch Jillian's obsession to identify Sam Little's victims, compromises her quality of life. The solace she brings families is an open ear, the killer's name and a chance to chose their loved ones case. Jillian's insight into Sam is simple and familiar. Neglect, abuse, predisposition and learning his way through the world from corrupt reformatory schools. Her relationship with him a bizarre courtship, he woos her with details of murders, and she lets him express his thoughts and feelings. Jillian elicits pathos from the viewer. While trying to understand Little, and a society violent towards women, her personal experience and identification with the victims, clouds the narrative. Is racism and sexism is to blame for the cold cases of marginalized women? There's no other exploration. Serial killers only perceived to be white men; Crime waves of the 80's-90's; difficulty finding leads when two strangers have a chance meeting. And the truth of Little's victimology, he picked people society wouldn't miss because they lived in its margins. Is that victim blaming or a plain appraisal? Overall I really enjoyed the four episodes. At times I was confused by Jillian's motives, was she listening to help families heal at great personal expense, or is she a martyr channeling their pain into blame? See more 04/24/2021 I loved the reality, and how the narrator engages the viewers. I felt like I was going on the journey with her and want to know more. I am looking forward to the rest of the episodes. If you like true crime, this is a show for you. See more dan c @cinemacriterion 04/20/2021 Riveting! Another great series by Joe Berlinger.
