"Dallas" is the saga of the Ewing family and its massive oil empire. Patriarch Jock has three sons. The eldest is J.R., the relentless CEO of Ewing Oil. Less obviously malicious are Bobby and Gary. Over a decade-plus of backstabbing, inbreeding, lust and greed, dozens of characters enter and exit the "Dallas" universe.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dallas aspires to be a grand soap opera about rivalries and romance, but its cartoonish depiction of Texas and sudsy plotting are more crude than slick.

Richard Hack The Hollywood Reporter 04/02/2023
Fascinating, juicy nonsense on the level of the $1.25 supermarket paperback. Go to Full Review
John J. O'Connor New York Times 03/01/2021
Wandering around among the players, with about three lines of dialogue, is the fine stage actress Barbara Bel Geddes, who plays the Ewing matriarch. The show is enervating. Go to Full Review
Will Jones Minneapolis Star Tribune 03/01/2021
The research for Dallas indeed appears to have been done by someone who didn't actually see "Giant," but heard a pretty good description of it from an older cousin. Go to Full Review
Keith Ashford Ottawa Citizen 03/01/2021
Combines a mawkish plot filled with dramatic sinkholes, a cast prone to befouling an already ridiculous script, and enough sexual innuendo to snap a garter belt. Go to Full Review

sean G @Sean123456789 07/18/2024 Great start to a great story, looks very 70's but still 10/10 See more Mike P @RT35394098 02/10/2024 Sudsy Southern Gothic served up Seventies Style... It's the epic battle for Ewing oil! "Dallas" is a bloody Battle Royal for all the Mighty US Oil Barons clawing to the top of the food chain!...It's also a very loose remake of "Giant"; and a raunchy version of Peyton Place; with lots of bedhopping; backstabbing; blackmail; bedlam; and brothers pitted against brothers; clawing for that kingpin seat over Ewing Oil....And who can forget "Who shot JR"? One of television's most iconic story arcs?...Not to mention "Who Shot Bobby"!! And all those other great cliffhangers!! And it's a whole lotta of trash!..And a whole lotta JR Ewing!!...Dallas is indeed a delicious guilty pleasure for the first few seasons; until the dreaded Dream Season; when everything goes to Hell. Still, it's a heck of a fun ride for most of it's run...With good scripting; great actors; good production values; a great villain, (maybe tv's BEST villain); and a lot of good old fashioned trashy fun nestled way down south of the Mason Dixon line... Super popular in its day, (it was a ratings blockbuster!), and super influential now; shows like Succession and Billions owe a very obvious debt to Dallas...Overall: Thumbs up 👍 See more FRANK F @RT85901607 06/25/2023 A rocky start but the last episode of the mini-series has a glimmer of the spark of future seasons.
