While there are definitely some laughs to be had, they end up being few and far between and often come across as being overly ambitious, trying too hard to win over the audience.

This mash-up of Lord of the Flies, Mad Max and Riverdale quickly wears out its self-conscious welcome.

When you have a show that can deliver gory scenes in the same breath as heartwrenching explorations of relationships and then humor landing in all the spaces in between, you just know that you found something special.

Daybreak will undoubtedly attract a young crowd, but spelling everything out in black and white underestimates their intelligence.
November 6, 2019
Despite drafting in the likes of Matthew Broderick, Ken Marino, Krysta Rodriguez as the adults, there isn't enough here to make 'Daybreak' particularly exciting. The comedy falls flat and tries far too hard to prop itself up with pop culture references.

With so much else to watch these days, committing to ten episodes of this show isn't worth your time unless you're really into snarky post-apocalyptic tales or are looking for something to play in the background while you're doing other things.

Much like its protagonist, Daybreak doesn't claim to be smart - a kind of preemptive defense against inevitable criticisms - instead it revels in its appropriation of familiar genre ideas and cliches about high school cliques and teenage tribalism.

It's pretty outrageous, so if that's your thing, you'll love it...the show does a really great job of poking fun at the generation it's following.

The show that Daybreak is trying so desperately to be is in there. All it needs is to dial it back a ton and pick and choose its moments.

Daybreak weakens when it flails too far over the top, but when it finds that sweet balance between cartoon and catharsis it can be surprisingly powerful.

Daybreak brings new life to the genre with writing so clever, a single viewing won't be enough.
October 25, 2019
There wasn't enough we liked to return to the show.
October 25, 2019
Peyton and Coleite's vision is a hokey, desperately snarky zombie tale that churns out an entirely new crop of characters, only to center on the least interesting of the bunch.

Broken fourth walls, ironic slo-mo montages, characters observing storytelling tropes as they participate in them: every meta trick available is deployed to mask the show's empty emotional core.
