Drawing on a new generation of voices, including interviews from those close to her, the series is a completely fresh take that re-examines the life of an icon through the lens of modernity: reframing her story to discover the real woman behind the "People's Princess".

The series is largely a catalog of old tabloid headlines recycled with commensurate breathlessness, its narrative propulsion being provided by professional royal-watchers, authors of tell-all books and journalists of the peep-hole variety. Go to Full Review

jabba h @Old_Goat 11/20/2021 I think the freshest thing about "Diana," the thing that sets it apart from the numerous other movies and documentaries about Diana, Princess of Wales' life is the audio recordings played throughout the 6 episodes where you hear her speak, detailing the feelings she had during her all-too-short life. The recordings were made by the author of her book, "Diana: Her True Story," Andrew Morton, during taped interviews with her made in secret while putting the book together under the noses of the British Royal Family. I'm not a "Diana-phile," so some of this material may have been covered in other shows, but I found the CNN production very interesting to watch. It starts off with a part of Diana's life much earlier than I had ever seen before, when she was just a little girl and what she went through with a mother who abandoned her as well as her time at boarding school. It's probably my own naivety that I didn't know how crucial it was for the British upper crust families to have a male heir, and one of the things that comes out is that Diana was relatively unwanted at first because they were sincerely trying to have a male child. It's put forth how much Diana wanted Queen Elizabeth to fill a portion of the role of absentee mother when she married Prince Charles. There is a great deal of happiness in Diana's life, but there's much sadness in it as well...the sadness that came from rejection by her own mother, her husband, and the family of her husband. The series covers her childhood, her teen years, the meeting and marriage to Charles, the infidelity both on his part AND hers, and her ultimate untimely death. There's even mention of her (now) adult children's marriages and their future as influenced by their late mother. Of all the positives in the show, my one complaint is that some of the people commenting are so young, they were either very, very young at the time all this went on OR they weren't even born yet. There are still many, many people alive today they could have had comment on the segments. There was no reason at all to bring in some of the younger ones to comment on things they've only read about or seen on TV. If you're a huge fan of the late Princess of Wales, this series is a must-watch, and even if you're only have a casual interest, it's still a good watch. The series is 6 episodes long, each of which lasts about an hour. We DVR'd all the episodes and binge-watched them. Good effort, CNN!
