Critic Reviews for Harper's Island Season 1
All Critics (25) | Top Critics (16) | Fresh (16) | Rotten (9)
To prevent piracy, CBS imprinted each TV critic's name on his or her DVDs of Harper's Island. Seeing my name on screen throughout this lame series was the only thing that succeeded in sending shivers up my spine.
What a hoot. What a ridiculous, soap-operatic cutup of a series. But if you can stop giggling long enough, as I managed to - quite a feat, let me tell you - Harper's Island is also hugely enjoyable.
Based on tonight's premiere, all [the] subplots give Harper's Island enough dramatic heft to appeal to fans of classic murder mysteries as well as those who simply enjoy great showers of blood.
At its best, the CBS thriller was a throw-away summer diversion.
It's like every horror film ever made - and it really doesn't skimp on the gore.
All of the by-the-numbers soap-opera plot points felt stale and uninteresting because they came across like treading water-listless character beats intended to string people along until the show became a locked-room horror chase.
There are a few decent scares before bedtime, but the plot twists aren't anything to write home about at the start. Style-wise, we're not talking "Twin Peaks" here.
It's an entertaining enough diversion that may grow more intriguing as other series end their season-long runs next month and viewers become more desperate for fresh entertainment.
A rewatch will prove that clues were established from the first episode, but these are so organically constructed into the narrative that you'll never even notice the first time around.
The whodunit set-up in its first showing is more than enough to keep viewers engaged to the end.
Caught in a crossfire between licence-payers and rival media groups, the BBC has reached the frankly surreal conclusion that the answer is to cut down on imported programmes.
Sure, it may have skewed towards a typical slasher flick at some points towards the end, but it was entertaining and that is all you can really ask for in the end.

Feb 13, 2019It's a teen network "horror". Terrible to say the least.

Sep 13, 2018It gives a lot of thrills and chills, not only because of its dark atmosphere that will seem heavier episode after episode but also because of its great cast that will seem clumsy at the first episode but that will improve a lot in the next ones. It has a slow start but after the 5th episode you will not be capable of stop watching it.

May 30, 2016One of my favorite guilty pleasures. Nothing spectacular about the dialogue, or plot, but it moves at a good pace, a bunch of characters to guess the whodunnit, and a bunch of fun kills. As the cast does drop, you do get a bit more character as well, to give the show a bit of character.

Jul 16, 20148/10 Really surprised me. This Series got an original concept, and it was very well done. Every week someone was eliminated, every episode guessing who the killer was, loved that thrill.
