What to Know

Critics Consensus

Marriage's fidelity to mundane reality can make for uncomfortable -- and sometimes meandering -- viewing, but the perfect union of Sean Bean and Nicola Walker's performances gives this drama a compelling center.

Here is a show about an ordinary, boring couple falling apart in the same ordinary, boring ways as the rest of us. Except this couple is Sean Bean and Nicola Walker, so playing witness to their benign bickering is infinitely more compelling and enjoyable. Go to Full Review

However banal and tedious Ian and Emma’s interactions are throughout the four-part drama, it is freighted with familiarity, realism and an unmistakeable sense of this being the way two people who have endured a very long partnership talk to each other. Go to Full Review

I have never seen a show that has had such a marmite reaction, but this show is magnificent. I absolutely adore it, because everything in it is so natural to the extent where it hardly feels like a television show at all. Go to Full Review

We must thank Golaszewski for the honesty with which the series is written and filmed, perhaps too sincere to compete with other television products loaded with artifice. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Nicola Walker is surely the hardest-working actor in British television. She’s everywhere, sometimes all at once. But since she’s also very good, that’s hardly a problem. Go to Full Review

I loved its merciless accuracy. You had to stop nodding in recognition at all the little details lest your head dropped off by episode end. Go to Full Review

ORLY J @RT22678094 Oct 21 Watched it for Nicola Walker, but disappointed. Some real people's lives are probably this boring and depressing, it's 'realistic'. But whatever writing magic could turn that into an interesting show hasn't been accomplished here. it's just boring and contagiously depressing. The critic v audience divergence is interesting though not sure what it signifies. See more diane S @RT11306624 04/10/2025 What began to wear on me after I started to see through the characters was the incredibly annoying fact that the family depicted here treated each other as if they were total strangers. In fact the family scenes in this show played like scenes in a business office. The characters were completely one dimensional and offensively superficial with no depth, no real feelings and no ability to have or express an honest or sincere thought. They were like those freakishly empty, smiling figures painted on poster board along the highway. And they seemed pleased with themselves to be that way and to play it safe by having literally nothing going on inside of them and then flamboyantly showing off a constant barrage of smiling, laughing and beaming from ear to ear with absolutely zero feeling behind any of it. And the fact that all of this was all done in a self congratulatory way made it all the more offensive and even repulsive. I don't know if this is the fault of the writer but the actors certainly carried it off with a great deal of self-satisfied zeal. What they were was overly proud of themselves because they weren't being challenged at all by a script completely devoid of any depth. The understated writing, the subtle performances and the last episode revealing Ian and Emma to be real life heroes, beautiful. See more Serra K @RT18525308 11/12/2023 Questions the commitment. A real reflection of marriage relationship institution. Moments of a couple from affection to being irritated. Being have to answer the stupid questions. All small details, facial expressions are going to keep you focused. Actors have played all emotions and all the boring perfectly like they were living in that moment and director and art directors have done their best to show it its best. See more Elizabeth R @RT67915993 10/21/2023 After two episodes, I have no idea what the plot is supposed to be. Most of the time, characters are mumbling, so I don't understand what they've said.
