Graeme Blundell The Australian 12/16/2020
Mystery Road, the tropic gothic outback noir, returned and it was a tonic to see Aaron Pedersen, one of our great actors, again as detective Jay Swan... Go to Full Review
Mike Hale New York Times 10/12/2020
"Mystery Road" is frequently labeled outback noir, but with its vistas, its sweaty, buggy ambience and its frontier righteousness, it's really a hard-boiled neo-western, and Swan is its roving Paladin. Go to Full Review

Han W @RT71829930 Sep 24 great show - and great acting. love the scenery. See more Nancy M @nmack 02/26/2023 Excellent series both seasons 1 and 2 and the Origin series. Excellent performances, interesting storylines, not at all predictable. Interesting and informative (not pedantic) look into aboriginal peoples culture and general Australian culture and dynamics. Would really like more seasons of this. (Judy Davis was of course fantastic in season 1) See more Destroy - Erase - Improve S @Destroy-Erase-Improve 08/22/2021 As a massive fan of the movies and TV series my wife and I were both extremely disappointed by this season. Detective Jay Swan is now 90% more brooding and far too silent. And when he does talk he just tends to yell a lot. He generally stands around with a 1000 yard stare with a frown on his face. Aaron has also put on weight and his pot belly does nothing to sell the anti-hero detective. The story is convoluted, disjointed and most episodes lack any kind of interesting plot points that make you actually look forward to the next episode. Jada Alberts as Fran started off a really interesting character but is criminally underutilized. We don't recommend this season one bit. However, as of August 2021 season 3 has been announced with a younger Detective Jay Swan. If Aaron Pederson is unwilling to get into shape for the roll then Mark Coles Smith known for The Taxi Driver looks to be a fantastic fit! See more 10/11/2020 Stilted script, wooden acting, my belief in modern Australian culture was suspended from the opening shots. Never to return. If life really that violent, crude and uncaring in modern Western Australia. I've seen more realistic Mexican soap operas. See more 10/03/2020 So the critical reviews here are confusing. One says we need new characters but these series time in between the two movies so they are a literal pathway from Mystery Road to Goldstone so you can't have different characters. Second accusation was use of horror and violence which is nonsense - I think series two has struck the right balance and is excellent. The acting is great, the location (like Goldstone) lends itself to amazing scenery and I feel the story is more nuanced this time. Loving it, hoping for more! See more 09/21/2020 I really enjoyed the previous harsh-but-absorbing Mystery Road movie and series one – and Goldstone – here in the UK, but Mystery Road series two is going the way of too many thriller series, where the writers feel they have to beef up the naked aggression, violence and horror until the whole thing becomes a parody of itself (yes, I'm thinking of you, Luther). I just didn't expect it to happen this quickly. Detective Jay Swan is now not so much taciturn as a total sociopath at the expense of subtlety, nuance and believability, a trait he shares with other members of the cast trying to make sense of roles that require them to demonstrate a kind of coarse bipolar syndrome rather than acting skills. Horrible. See more Read all reviews
